The incident happened in the final minutes of The Strongest's 3-2 defeat of Blooming in the Bolivian Championship on August 4, but details of the incident have only now been made public.
Specifically, during the extra time of the above match, The Strongest fans threw fireworks (called "llorona", known for their ability to fly through the air like rockets) onto the field and created a chaotic scene.
Fans on the field and players from both teams had to run away to avoid injury. However, striker Juan Godoy - who scored the winning goal 3-2 for The Strongest - was not so lucky.
Juan Godoy had no time to react to the chaos before a llorona firecracker from a fan hit him. The striker fell to the ground, clutching his genitals. After being treated by medical staff, he was taken off the pitch in pain.
Reports in Bolivia's El Deber newspaper said Godoy suffered first-degree burns to his thighs and a hematoma in his testicles.
The Strongest's UltraSur group is believed to be responsible for the incident. Bolivian media suspect that The Strongest fans used the fireworks to protest against the club's owners.
However, UltraSur denied this information and said they fired fireworks to celebrate and apologized to Godoy. The group also announced that they would find the culprit and "not set off fireworks in the next matches".
