The Indonesian team was eliminated in the round of 16 of the 2023 Asian Cup after a 0-4 defeat to Australia. This was a match in which the team from the archipelago played well, but they showed their immaturity and fell before the experience of Australia.

Speaking after the match, the President of the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI), Erick Thohir, expressed his disappointment with the result of his team. The head of Indonesian football said: "Honestly, I am extremely disappointed that the Indonesian team stopped in the round of 16 of the 2023 Asian Cup after a heavy defeat.
However, the players fight with all their might, with great spirit and comfort. They were not intimidated by a strong opponent."
Coach Shin Tae Yong's contract with the Indonesian Football Federation will expire in June 2024. However, despite helping Indonesian football make history by passing the group stage of the 2023 Asian Cup for the first time, he still did not receive a new contract.

Billionaire Erick Thohir shared: "He needs to help the Indonesian U23 team pass the group stage to reach the quarter-finals of the U23 Asian Cup next April. If the national team reaches the last 16 of the 2023 Asian Cup, the U23 team needs to be among the top 8 teams. That is our goal."
According to CNN Indonesia, Indonesian fans were still satisfied despite their team's 0-4 defeat to Australia. They have called on the country's Football Association to extend coach Shin Tae Yong's contract until 2027.
At the 2024 AFC U23 Championship, Indonesia U23 will be in the same group as Australia, Jordan and Qatar. This is a difficult group for coach Shin Tae Yong's team. This is an important tournament as the three strongest teams will qualify for the 2024 Olympics.
