From concerns about practical action
At Tuyen Hoa Regional Medical Center, which receives and examines hundreds of patients every day, the medical team not only faces professional pressure but also regularly witnesses difficult situations. Many poor patients, in addition to the pain of illness, also have to bear the burden of travel, food, and living expenses...
Understanding and sharing those difficulties, stemming from the concerns of the staff, especially the important role of the grassroots union, the idea of the "Piggy Bank" model to raise funds to support poor patients and families in difficult circumstances was born.
The goal is very simple but extremely meaningful: to mobilize each cadre, doctor, and medical staff to voluntarily save a small part of their daily income to "raise pigs", creating a fund to promptly help poor patients and families in difficult circumstances in the area.
Doctor Vu Xuan Thuy, Deputy Director of Tuyen Hoa Regional Medical Center shared: Through the process of monitoring patients coming to the clinic and using services at the unit, we have noticed that many cases are in extremely difficult circumstances, they do not even have enough money to cover meals or travel expenses. Understanding and sympathizing deeply with those difficulties, in order to share the burden with the patients, the "Piggy Bank" model was launched on a completely voluntary basis.
With the motto “a little from each person, small things make a big difference”, this model aims to raise a small but timely fund to directly support poor patients and families in especially difficult circumstances. Each coin donated from “Piggy Bank” is filled with the hearts and feelings of the entire team of cadres, doctors and staff here. We hope that, although the material value may not be large, the spiritual value that the model brings will help patients have more confidence and motivation to overcome adversity. At the same time, this meaningful activity will also contribute to educating and promoting the spirit of solidarity, “mutual love”, “the healthy leaves cover the torn leaves” in each cadre and civil servant of the unit.
...To warm the lives
The “Piggy Bank” model is being implemented in a systematic and synchronous manner. With the words “Piggy Bank to support poor patients” printed on the donation box located in the lobby on the first floor of the center, every day, after each shift, doctors, nurses, and staff of the unit set aside small amounts of money and savings to put into the box. This action takes place regularly and voluntarily, creating a habit and a good cultural feature of the staff here.
Launched in 2021, after nearly 4 years of implementation, the model has raised more than 14 million VND. Although the amount of money collected from the "Piggy Bank" model is not too large, it has become a valuable source of encouragement, promptly helping patients and families in difficult circumstances.
In particular, the model supported Dr. Nguyen The Truong, former Head of Lam Hoa Commune Health Station, Tuyen Hoa District (old) who suffered from a serious illness; bought desks, chairs, and study lamps for Nguyen Huu Manh in Chau Hoa Commune, an orphan; supported patients in difficult circumstances; gave gifts to 5 sponsored cases...
Every 6 months or on special occasions such as holidays and Tet, the piggy bank will be "dissected" in a warm, solemn and transparent atmosphere. All donations will be transferred to the Center's Poor Patient Support Fund managed by the unit's Union, ready to support difficult cases in a timely and reasonable manner.
Ms. Mai Thi Tung, in Thanh Chau village, Tuyen Hoa commune, shared: “My family is very poor, my husband passed away due to cancer, I am currently raising 6 children of school age alone. Receiving support from the Poor Patient Support Fund of Tuyen Hoa Regional Medical Center, I feel extremely warm. This is not only money but also humanity, practical care that we never thought of.”
The “Piggy Bank” model at Tuyen Hoa Regional Medical Center does not stop at raising funds to help people in difficult circumstances and poor patients. It has truly become a movement with strong influence, arousing the spirit of solidarity and sharing throughout the unit, creating an environment to educate a frugal and compassionate lifestyle among medical staff, and building an internal emulation movement within the unit. Hopefully, this meaningful and humane model will continue to be maintained and expanded, so that more and more poor patients and families in difficult circumstances can be supported on their journey to regain their health and rise up in life.
