Heavy rain late in the day forced a halt to the second round with 13 players still to complete. When play resumed Saturday morning, only three players remained under par, the fewest at a US Open in seven years.

While many of the big names struggled to make the cut, Burns played consistently with six birdies – all from under 10 feet. He finished the round at under 3, holding a one-stroke lead over JJ Spaun (under 2), who lost the lead after a disastrous bogey on the 18th hole.

Viktor Hovland was right behind him with a total of -1, thanks to an impressive round of -2 68 that included two hole-outs from 50 feet. Despite a double bogey on the second hole, the Norwegian golfer was pleased with his current position: “Although it was tiring because I had to concentrate on each shot, I felt I kept a lot of composure.”

Burns also made history by becoming the second golfer in the major era to take the lead after 36 holes, despite being outside the top 30 after round 1. Previously, Curtis Strange did the same at the 1989 US Open and then won the championship.

“I played really well today,” Burns said. “Staying positive and taking a smart approach is always key in a tournament like this.”

Bryson DeChambeau became the former US Open champion.

A series of big names stopped early

This year's US Open is showing its true harsh nature, and Oakmont - the famous "fire bowl" of golf continues to prove why this is one of the most difficult courses in the world .

Even Rory McIlroy, one of the top contenders, was not immune to the pressure. He missed a shot and became so angry that he threw his club during the match, although he later birdied the 18th hole to make the cut.

Shane Lowry made a rare mistake when he accidentally picked up the ball without marking its position. Thriston Lawrence once reached -6, but completely collapsed with a series of 6 bogeys and 1 double bogey in just the last 9 holes.

Thomas Detry had 3 double bogeys in just 4 holes, and Phil Mickelson is likely to close out his 34th and perhaps final US Open of his career, with a round of 74 strokes (+4), not enough to make the cut.

With the cut set at +7, a number of famous golfers had to say goodbye to the tournament. Most notably, defending champion Bryson DeChambeau.

A nightmare second round with 8 bogeys, 1 double and only 3 birdies left him with a total score of +10 after 36 holes, 3 strokes short of the cut threshold. DeChambeau became the first defending champion to be eliminated after 36 holes at the US Open since Martin Kaymer in 2015.

Other big names also suffered the same fate: Dustin Johnson (+10) – who won at Oakmont in 2016, Justin Thomas (+12), Justin Rose (+14) and Shane Lowry (+17).
