“Smart Robot” Conquers Youth Creativity Contest in Quang Tri Province

With a novel and creative idea, the project "Smart Robot" in the Toy category helped Tran Phuc Minh, a 6B student at Nguyen Trai Secondary School, Dong Ha City, win First Prize at the 14th Quang Tri Province Youth Creativity Contest in 2025. This achievement not only affirms his talent but also inspires creativity for many students in the area.

“Smart Robot” is a project that Phuc Minh started working on since the beginning of 6th grade. Sharing about the initial idea, Minh said that he has long wanted to create a toy that can both entertain and educate.

“Inspired by watching robot videos on YouTube by the talented former NASA engineer Mark Rober, I wondered if I could create my own robot? That’s why “Smart Robot” was born. Through that, I also want to prove to everyone that 6th graders can also build robots,” Phuc Minh confided.

The robot that Phuc Minh created is a model of an energy ball collecting robot, which can move through obstacles and collect the ball to the right target within a limited time. After coming up with the idea, he searched for suitable robot components such as using frames, wheels, electronic circuit boards, motors, etc. Thereby, helping the robot have a beautiful shape, the ability to move, pick up and drop, and roll objects most flexibly.

With his robot, Phuc Minh uses drag-and-drop software to program the robot to perform basic operations: move forward, backward, avoid obstacles, stop at the right position, and pick up and drop objects. “This is the difficult part and takes a lot of time. If I drag and drop a command wrongly, I will have to program it all over again,” Minh said. Before testing the robot, he also spent time designing the competition field using cardboard models, arranging obstacles and objects in many positions for the robot to perform tasks like in a real competition. In the parts that are still incorrect, he edits and improves until it is stable.

Compared to other robots, Minh's robot product can operate in both modes: manual control for beginners and automatic operation according to the program for those who already know how to program. "Smart robot" is not only used in STEM lessons to train students' technological thinking but also as a lively game, used in extracurricular hours or classroom activities.

From there, it contributes to developing teamwork skills, problem solving and entertainment after stressful study hours. Although it is the first project, right after its launch, Phuc Minh's "Smart Robot" project immediately made an impression and was highly appreciated by the jury of the Quang Tri Province Youth Creativity Contest. Not only did it win First Prize at the Provincial Youth Creativity Contest, this creative project was also selected to participate in the National Youth Creativity Contest that will take place in the near future. "Winning First Prize at the Provincial Youth Creativity Contest is an honor and happiness for me, and also a motivation for me to try harder in the next works and projects," Phuc Minh excitedly said.

Speaking to reporters, Mr. Tran Trung Dung, Minh's father, said that since he was a child, he has shown a passion for things related to science , engineering and technology. "We always respect all of our children's choices, so we only play a role in guiding, encouraging and creating the best conditions for them to develop.

In the “Smart Robot” project, Phuc Minh shared his ideas with his parents, then researched and programmed the robot himself. Seeing him happy when he achieved high results in the competition, we were very happy. Hopefully, this will be a stepping stone for him to continue to be creative and pursue his passion,” said Mr. Dung.

Talking more about the “Smart Robot” project, Phuc Minh plans to upgrade it by adding a camera or color sensor to recognize objects by color; upgrade control by phone or hand, making it easier to play remotely.

At the same time, the design of the competition field changes the difficulty, creating the feeling of a real competition; applying AI, artificial intelligence to make the robot a companion that can remind you of the daily schedule...

For me, robots are not just complex technological products for adults or experts. They are also tools that help children my age to play and learn, practice thinking and satisfy their passion for technology.
