Meanwhile, Luxembourg has one of the highest rates of car ownership in the world. Specifically, according to Eurostat, Luxembourg had 678 cars per 1,000 inhabitants in 2022. This high car ownership rate is often attributed to the country's wealth and the presence of a large number of cross-border workers using company cars registered in Luxembourg.

Aiming to cut carbon emissions and encourage Luxembourgers to ditch their cars for shorter journeys, the country's free public transport scheme was launched in 2020.

Buses, trains, and trams are all free, although passengers still have to pay for first class. On weekends, visitors can even use the country’s night bus system for free. And if you like cycling, you can also take your bike on any of the country’s trains for free.

However, visitors need to note one thing.

Many day visitors to Luxembourg from Germany, Belgium or France still have to pay a fee if they use public transport for the journey across the border.

However, if you're simply traveling around Luxembourg, the country's public transport system is a great option for saving money.

Luxembourg is a small European country, bordered by Belgium, France and Germany, with a population of around 650,000. Much of the country is rural, with the dense Ardennes forest and nature parks in the north, the rocky gorges of the Mullerthal region in the east and the Moselle river valley in the southeast. Luxembourg's capital, Luxembourg City, is famous for its fortified medieval old town, perched on steep cliffs.
