On the afternoon of June 13 (May 18, At Ty year), at Nguyen Huu Canh Church (Van Ninh commune, Quang Ninh district, Quang Binh province), Quang Binh Provincial Museum (under the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism) in coordination with the Nguyen Huu clan council solemnly held the 325th death anniversary (1700-2025) of Lord Le Thanh Hau Nguyen Huu Canh.
Presenting about the life and career of the famous general who opened up the South, Ms. Le Thi Hoai Huong, Director of the Quang Binh Provincial General Museum, emphasized: Le Thanh Marquis Nguyen Huu Canh was born in 1650 in Phuc Tin village, Phong Loc district, Quang Binh town (now Van Ninh commune, Quang Ninh district, Quang Binh province).
He was the grandson of Marquis Trieu Van Nguyen Trieu Van and the third son of Marquis Chieu Vu Nguyen Huu Dat. Nguyen Huu Canh grew up in a military family environment, and soon revealed his intelligence, both literary and martial.
From a young age, he followed his father to fight everywhere, achieved many feats, was highly regarded by Lord Nguyen, was given the title Le Thanh Hau and assigned to hold the position of Cai Co. In early 1692, under the order of Lord Nguyen, he was appointed as General with advisor Nguyen Dinh Quang to lead troops to suppress the border rebellion.
By 1693, the entire Champa land was annexed to the Dang Trong territory, contributing to maintaining sovereignty and expanding the territory. Notably, in 1698 (Mau Dan), Nguyen Huu Canh was appointed as the Commander-in-Chief of Dong Nai, Saigon, and Ben Nghe.
With his strategic vision, he not only organized land reclamation, established hamlets, and stabilized the lives of the residents, but also established an administrative system and established Gia Dinh prefecture. His ideology of “people first” along with his virtue and strategic talent made a great mark in the cause of expanding the southern territory.
After the pacification, on May 9, Canh Thin year (1700), on the way from the new land back to Dinh Tran Bien, when reaching the Tien Giang - Rach Gam intersection, Nguyen Huu Canh fell ill and died suddenly.
Initially, his body was buried in Binh Hoanh village, Cu Lao Pho (now in Dong Nai province), then reburied in his hometown at Thac Ro, Truong Thuy commune, Le Thuy district, Quang Binh province. His tomb is located on a hill in the An Ma mountain range, with its back leaning against the mountain, facing the gentle Kien Giang river, showing a harmonious and solemn feng shui.
The death anniversary of Lord Le Thanh Hau Nguyen Huu Canh is not only an occasion to pay tribute to the merits of a founding father who made great contributions to the cause of the Southern expansion, but also has profound educational significance. This is an opportunity for present and future generations to review the tradition of “remembering the source of water when drinking water”, promote national pride, foster patriotism and the responsibility to preserve and develop the homeland and country.
