In the cucumber field along the Nam Luong stream, Ma Thi Xiem’s family in Na Luong village, Nghia Do commune is working hard to harvest the melons to make the delivery in the late afternoon. With an area of nearly 4 sao of melons, her family has to mobilize all their labor and ask relatives to help harvest in a way that they can exchange labor with each other in order to keep up with the schedule.
This is the second year that her family has participated in growing cucumbers under the joint model. Thanks to the accumulated experience in growing and caring for the cucumbers, her family's melon field has quite good quality.
Cucumber care
Mr. Hoang Van Diep's family in Kem village also grows 2.5 sao of melons. Although the harvest has just begun, Mr. Diep is confident that his family's productivity this year will certainly be higher than last year. The reason is that this year his family has more experience in care, the plants grow better, and the fruit set rate is higher. The first harvest yielded 200 kg, with a selling price of 3.5 thousand VND/kg, bringing Mr. Diep's family 700 thousand VND. It is expected that this year's 2.5 sao of melons will yield about 5 tons of fruit. If prices are stable, Mr. Diep's family is expected to have a successful harvest year with this new farming model.
The new Nghia Do commune was established on the basis of merging the entire natural area and population of the three communes of Nghia Do, Tan Tien, and Vinh Yen (belonging to Bao Yen district, Lao Cai province). After the merger, the new Nghia Do commune has a total natural area of 159.42 km2; a population of 13,906 people; and its headquarters is located in the old Nghia Do commune.
The cucumber growing linkage model is implemented by the Cucumber Countryside Company Limited, located in Bac Ninh province, in coordination with the locality. Nghia Do commune has 48 participating households with a total area of over 5.2 hectares in Muong Kem, Na Luong, Ban Hon, Ban Hoc villages. Families participating in the model will be provided with seeds, fertilizers, instructions on planting techniques, care and pest control measures by the Cucumber Countryside Company Limited. At the same time, this unit also commits to purchasing products at flexible prices from 2,000 - 15,000 VND/kg and especially purchasing melons right at the field when people harvest.
Cucumber field in Nghia Do commune
Ms. Nhu Thi Tam, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Nghia Do Commune, Lao Cai Province, said: The advantage of this model of growing melons in association is that people can take advantage of areas that cannot grow rice, areas that do not have a proactive water source or are often flooded locally to grow cucumbers.
Raising the beds not only helps to take advantage of low-lying land but also ensures enough irrigation water, helping cucumber plants to develop and grow well.
Cucumbers are easy to grow, easy to care for, and have a short growing period. After just over a month of planting, the melons begin to yield harvests. Harvesting is done in several batches, spread out over a period of 30 to 45 days. It is estimated that 1 sao of melons can yield about 50kg/day.
With the initial success of the melon growing model, the Party Committee and the government of Nghia Do commune are continuing to promote propaganda and mobilize people to expand the melon growing area.
Packing melons for export
Along with that, the commune will continue to strengthen production linkages and product consumption to ensure stable output and increase sustainable income for people.
This model not only helps people escape poverty but also opens up a new direction for local agriculture, turning difficult land areas into potential economic resources, contributing to changing the face of rural areas in Nghia Do commune.
