Weaving sedge mats in Quang Phuc commune.
The traditional craft of making banh la rang bua in Xuan Lap commune (Tho Xuan) has existed for hundreds of years. In the past, villagers made cakes mainly for their families or for holidays and Tet. Today, the craft has conditions to develop in a commercial direction, especially when it is recognized as a traditional craft village. Chairman of Xuan Lap Commune People's Committee Le Dinh Hai said: Banh la rang bua of the locality is a 3-star OCOP product, and has been granted a barcode by the Department of Intellectual Property ( Ministry of Science and Technology )... These factors have created conditions for Xuan Lap banh la rang bua to develop and expand, and have been present in many provinces and cities in the country. Up to now, in Xuan Lap commune, there are about 270 households participating in the craft. The households making cakes all have stable incomes, many households have a well-off life.
In addition to providing a stable source of income for the baking households, it also creates regular jobs for 100 workers and about 300 seasonal workers, with income ranging from 5 - 8 million VND/person/month. Income from baking has contributed to raising the income of people in the commune, currently reaching 73 - 74 million VND/person/year.
As one of the households making banh la rang bua in Xuan Lap commune, Ms. Do Thi Khuong, owner of Do Khuong banh la rang bua establishment, said: "Making banh la has helped my family's life become more prosperous. In particular, after banh la rang bua was recognized as a 3-star OCOP product, the output of banh la rang bua increased, ranging from 20,000 - 24,000 cakes/year, creating jobs and regular income for 4 workers, with a daily wage ranging from 200 - 250,000 VND/day".
Quang Phuc Commune is the locality with the most developed sedge mat craft in Quang Xuong District. The whole commune currently has more than 200 households participating in the craft, concentrated in 5/6 villages. Vice Chairman of the Commune People's Committee Nguyen Van Binh said: Previously, sedge mats were made entirely by hand, with low productivity. In addition, many types of mats with eye-catching designs such as plastic mats, bamboo mats, etc. have appeared on the market, making it difficult for local sedge mats to compete. Since 2006, many households have boldly invested in and purchased machinery, improving productivity and product quality to meet market demand. Thanks to that, Quang Phuc sedge mats have been present in many provinces and cities across the country. In particular, since Quang Phuc sedge mat craft village was recognized by the province as a traditional craft village in 2021 and sedge mat products achieved OCOP in 2022, it has created conditions for Quang Phuc sedge mats to develop and expand the consumption market in many provinces and cities across the country. Currently, Quang Phuc commune has 240 sedge mat weaving machines and produces about 9 million sedge mats per year. The amount of sedge mats consumed not only helps households earn hundreds of millions of VND per year, but also creates jobs and income for 3,650 workers in the commune, with an additional income of 5.5 - 7.5 million VND/person/month.
According to the Thanh Hoa Rural Development Department, out of 123 occupations and craft villages recognized by the province, there are 50 OCOP products. In general, OCOP products of traditional craft villages have been invested in, innovated in design, packaging and supported in promotion and trade promotion inside and outside the province, so they have developed stably, created jobs and increased income for local people.
