Promoting the role of the elderly in participating in building the political system

Promoting the spirit of “Old age - bright example”, cadres and members of the elderly association in the province have been and continue to play a key role in patriotic emulation movements, building cultural life in residential areas. In particular, many elderly people have actively participated in building the political system at the grassroots level, making an important contribution to effectively implementing socio-economic development tasks and maintaining security and order in the locality.

The elderly in Nghia Thai commune (Nghia Hung) always actively participate in contributing to building their homeland to become more and more prosperous.

After years of fighting, dedicating his youth to protecting the Fatherland, returning to normal life, Mr. Pham Minh Can, To Cau village, Thanh Loi commune (Vu Ban) continues to promote the qualities of a soldier "Uncle Ho's Army". Despite his old age, overcoming all difficulties, Mr. Can still rises up and takes the lead in patriotic emulation movements, enthusiastically participates in community activities, takes care of people's lives, and is loved by his teammates and local people. He has held many roles such as: Head of the Front Work Committee, Head of the Veterans Association, member of the Elderly Association, and the Village Education Promotion Association. In every position, he clearly demonstrates his sense of responsibility and dedication, contributing to building consensus and development for the community. In the new rural construction movement, he and cadres, people and his children working in all parts of the country have joined hands to contribute to concretizing 1.7km of alley roads (3m wide); build 600m2 of cemetery road, build a 170m2 cultural house, contributing to bringing To Cau village to the advanced new rural standards. Talking about his work, Mr. Pham Minh Can said: "In order for the village work to be smooth and effective, I always uphold the spirit of being a role model, implementing well the Party's guidelines and policies, the State's policies and laws, and local regulations, together with the Party Committee and mass organizations, spreading the spirit of positivity, enthusiastically taking the lead in social activities, turning the decisions of superiors into specific actions to contribute to building an increasingly rich and beautiful homeland". In addition to spending time with his family and local activities, he also takes on the role of Vice Chairman of the Association of Soldiers of Quang Tri Ancient Citadel in 1972, Vu Ban district, actively connecting and gathering 156 members to participate in activities to build a spirit of solidarity, encouragement, and mutual support in life.

A typical individual in the activities of the elderly must also mention Mr. Nguyen Thanh Ba, Vice President of the Association of Victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin (AO/Dioxin) of the province. He and the Executive Committee of the Association have effectively advised the Party Committee and the government to implement many practical support programs. Under the direction of the Association's Executive Committee, associations at all levels in the province have organized propaganda and mobilized the community to join hands to ease the pain of Agent Orange. Many activities to care for and support victims have been maintained regularly, such as medical examination and treatment, gift giving, production support, house construction and repair... In the past year, the whole province has received support from the State, agencies, units, and philanthropists inside and outside the province to care for and help 23,591 victims with a total value of over 25 billion VND; In which, from the State's support source and local budget, gifts were provided on the occasion of Lunar New Year and War Invalids and Martyrs Day (July 27) of 15,937 billion VND; hardship allowances for 230 households, building and repairing charity houses for 8 families, supporting production capital for 258 families; visiting and giving gifts to 6,913 people, free health check-ups and treatment for 5,982 people, organizing for 36 victims to go to sleep and recuperate.

In addition, the Provincial Fatherland Front and the Provincial Red Cross presented gifts on the occasion of Tet to 233 poor households and Agent Orange victims in difficult circumstances.

The province currently has over 268,000 elderly people, accounting for more than 12% of the population. Most of the elderly have prestige and responsibility in the community and society, exemplary in implementing the Party's guidelines and policies, the State's policies and laws, and local regulations. The elderly are becoming a strong spiritual pillar of the family, an example of morality and lifestyle to educate children and grandchildren about traditional cultural values ​​from the simplest things. In particular, despite their old age and somewhat declining health, many elderly people have made contributions in various fields of work and in social movements, affirming the role and importance of the elderly and local Party committees and authorities in performing well political tasks, building the Party, government, and grassroots organizations increasingly stronger. In particular, many elderly people still directly participate in social work, holding important positions in the grassroots political system. Up to now, over 14 thousand elderly people have participated in the work of the Party, government, mass organizations, people's inspection, and grassroots mediation; 3,600 elderly people have participated in crime prevention and control; 75% of elderly people have participated in the Executive Committee of the Association for Promotion of Education at all levels, contributing their efforts and intelligence to the cause of "growing people"; actively mobilizing their children, families, clans, and people to support the Fund for Promotion of Education and Talents of villages, hamlets, and clans; promptly encouraging and rewarding excellent students.

To continue promoting the role of the elderly, the provincial Elderly Association continues to focus on building a strong association; innovating the content and methods of operation to gather a large number of members to participate in the emulation movement "Elderly people are shining examples", associated with the movement of the elderly participating in building the grassroots political system, organizing a comprehensive and strong association, thereby increasingly enhancing the role and position of the elderly in society.
