Donald Trump's re-election as US president with an "America First" policy has forced the European Union (EU) to reconsider its military role, while President Joe Biden's administration is trying to make a last-ditch effort to strengthen relations with key allies.

On November 13, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken arrived in Brussels, Belgium, and had meetings with leaders of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the European Union (EU).

This trip by the US Secretary of State is considered an effort by the administration of President Joe Biden Washington to strengthen relations with important allies before the leader's term ends.

President-elect Trump, who has questioned US military support for Ukraine, has said he would quickly end the conflict in the Eastern European country, raising concerns among America's European allies that he may try to force Kiev to accept peace on Moscow's terms.

Mr. Trump is also the one who opposed the US having to shoulder large military costs in NATO, and at the same time demanded that member countries of the military alliance increase spending in this field.

Speaking after meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Mr. Blinken said that the two sides discussed measures to support Ukraine as well as the issue of strengthening the defense industrial base of the military alliance.

According to Reuters , the US Secretary of State emphasized that Washington will continue to support Ukraine to help the country maintain its ability to respond effectively next year or even help Kiev gain a certain advantage at the negotiating table with Russia.

According to him, US officials are making every effort to transfer all aid approved by the US Congress to Ukraine before President Joe Biden's term ends.

During a meeting with outgoing EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Joseph Borrell and his successor, Kaja Kalla, Secretary Blinken affirmed the importance of the US-EU partnership.

On social network X , Mr. Blinken called this a “great opportunity” to meet Ms. Kallas to discuss “the most important issues - global peace, security and stability achieved through a strong transatlantic partnership”.

For his part, the soon-to-be EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kallas, stressed: “The transatlantic relationship is the world’s largest economic and security partnership. It must be built on what works best for both sides. This will not change.”

Meanwhile, Mr. Borrell said at a hearing in the European Parliament on the relationship between the EU and the US after Mr. Trump's victory in the 2024 US election: "The re-election of Donald Trump will make it clear that Europe needs to strengthen its security and decide its own destiny."

According to the diplomat, the EU is no longer just an economic union but "must demonstrate its ambitions and develop its own military strategy, must play a military role," TASS news agency reported.

"It is not in conflict with NATO, but rather plays a complementary role to NATO," the outgoing EU high representative noted.
