Mr. Medvedev: The West intends to remove President Zelensky

Mr. Medvedev said that Poland's discovery of a plot to assassinate Mr. Zelensky showed that the West wanted to "eliminate" the Ukrainian leader.

"A plot to assassinate Mr. Zelensky was discovered in Poland? That's really serious," Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said on April 19, commenting on the news that Poland had prosecuted a suspect involved in a planned attack on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Polish prosecutors earlier announced the indictment of a man named Pawel K. on charges of providing Russian agents with information about the security situation at Rzeszow-Jasionka airport in southeastern Poland, in order to plan the assassination of Ukrainian President Zelensky. Mr. Zelensky often uses this airport for foreign trips.

“That could be the first sign that the West has decided to get rid of him,” Mr Medvedev said, referring to the Ukrainian president, without providing any evidence.

According to Polish prosecutors, Ukraine uncovered a plot targeting Mr Zelensky and handed over evidence to Polish authorities to arrest Pawel K. Details of the plan have not been released.

President Zelensky said Russian forces had been trying to assassinate him for years, but were thwarted by Ukrainian security forces. The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) announced in August 2023 that it had arrested a woman accused of “gathering intelligence” about Mr Zelensky’s visit to the southern port city of Mykolaiv, in order to help Russian forces plan the attack.
