Widespread health care system, growing human resources
Specialist II Doctor Do Thi Nguyen, Director of Dong Nai Department of Health, said: From the early days of many shortages, up to now, Dong Nai's health system has developed strongly in both scale and quality. The province currently has 8 central, ministerial and sector hospitals; 3 provincial general hospitals; 3 regional general hospitals; 5 specialized hospitals and 6 provincial specialized centers; along with 22 regional health centers, 95 commune and ward health stations and 176 stations.
Dong Nai is among the top in the country in terms of non-public health care system with 12 private hospitals, 111 general clinics, more than 2 thousand specialized clinics and over 4 thousand pharmacies, drug stores and medical service facilities.
The number of doctors and medical staff in Dong Nai is increasing and their quality is getting higher. Among the more than 15,000 medical staff, there are more than 10 PhDs, 150 level II specialists, 110 masters and nearly 1,000 level I specialists. The average ratio is 10 doctors, 16.5 nurses and 4.6 pharmacists per 10,000 people. This is a very important foundation to improve the quality of treatment and deploy advanced medical techniques locally.
With continuous development, up to now, many provincial hospitals in Dong Nai have been able to perform many new, advanced techniques that previously could only be performed at the central level such as: open heart surgery, endoscopic heart surgery, ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation), and controlled hypothermia. Provincial and regional hospitals have mastered many other techniques such as: endoscopic joint replacement, percutaneous nephrolithotomy, orthopedic endoscopy, endoscopic general surgery, etc.
In particular, the cardiovascular field has made great strides with 5 cardiovascular centers operating effectively, promptly saving the lives of tens of thousands of patients. Regarding stroke treatment, Dong Nai General Hospital was awarded a Diamond certificate by the World Stroke Association; Thong Nhat General Hospital and Long Khanh Regional General Hospital have achieved platinum standards.
Specialist Doctor II Ngo Duc Tuan, Director of Dong Nai General Hospital, said: With a team of skilled doctors, modern facilities, equipment and machinery, the hospital has been achieving positive results. Thereby, helping local people enjoy high-quality medical services right in the locality without having to travel far, reducing costs, time and effort.
“The hospital will deploy kidney transplant techniques and establish three specialized centers: oncology, emergency and cardiology to not only develop expertise at the hospital, but also connect and support lower-level hospitals and medical centers to develop accordingly. At that time, the people will benefit the most,” shared Dr. Ngo Duc Tuan.
Building smart healthcare
In line with the digital transformation "flow", Dong Nai's health sector is resolutely implementing solutions to effectively carry out this work.
Compared to before, the process of registering for medical examination and treatment at medical facilities in the province has been significantly improved. 100% of medical facilities have implemented health insurance registration for medical examination and treatment using citizen identification cards.
In particular, medical records have been gradually digitized into electronic medical records, improving management efficiency, saving costs, time and effort of medical staff.
Specialist Doctor II Phan Van Huyen, Director of Long Khanh Regional General Hospital, said: The hospital has deployed electronic medical records since 2020. Up to now, the system has been increasingly upgraded, bringing many benefits to doctors, nurses, patients and managers. The hospital has applied artificial intelligence (AI) to imaging diagnosis, effectively supporting doctors in diagnosing and treating patients.
In addition to Long Khanh Regional General Hospital, Thong Nhat General Hospital has just officially deployed electronic medical records to replace paper medical records. 27 other hospitals and regional medical centers in the province are making efforts to speed up progress, determined to deploy electronic medical records before September 30, 2025 in accordance with the direction of the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Health. In addition, the Remote Medical Examination and Treatment Consultation System Project with a total investment of more than 20 billion VND; the Information Technology Terminal Investment Project serving digital transformation of the Dong Nai health sector with a total investment of nearly 25 billion VND are being accelerated. Thereby, aiming to build a smart healthcare system.
Specialist Doctor II Luu Van Tuong, Director of Cam My Regional Medical Center, said: To improve the quality of medical examination and treatment, aiming at patient satisfaction, the Board of Directors of the center determined that building a team of qualified, highly skilled, dedicated staff with a passion for the profession and patients is the most important. Therefore, in recent times, many doctors after receiving specialized training have returned to the center, working together to perform many new and advanced techniques. The center's facilities have been invested in, renovated, and are spacious and clean, helping patients feel more comfortable and satisfied when coming for medical examination and treatment.
Dong Nai currently has more than 13,400 hospital beds, equivalent to 30 hospital beds per 10,000 people, ranking second in the Southeast region, after Ho Chi Minh City. Up to now, there has been no situation of patients having to sleep in pairs, in triples, or on the floor like before.
Director of the Department of Health Do Thi Nguyen emphasized: In order to improve the quality of comprehensive health care for the people, the Dong Nai health sector determines that prevention plays a very important role. In fact, thanks to good prevention work, in recent times, the health sector has well controlled many dangerous epidemics such as: Covid-19, dengue fever, measles, hand, foot and mouth disease...
“In the coming time, Dong Nai's health sector will strongly shift from a passive mindset of medical examination and treatment to proactive care and disease prevention, with the goal of every citizen having access to quality medical services, especially in remote areas, remote areas, and ethnic minority areas. The grassroots health system will continue to be invested in and upgraded systematically to truly be the force closest to the people, understand the people best, provide the best primary health care for the people, and limit the situation of patients having to be transferred to higher levels,” shared Director of the Department of Health Do Thi Nguyen.
