On March 7, more than 300 students were abducted by armed robbers on motorcycles who stormed the LEA Primary and Secondary School in Kuriga village, Chikun district of Kaduna.
Some students were rescued but 287 of them remained with the kidnappers, including about 100 elementary school students and the rest junior high school students.
A local community member said the gunmen last week demanded a ransom of 1 billion naira ($620,000) and threatened to kill all the students if their demands were not met.
Sani added on Sunday that National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu coordinated “the actions of security agencies, which ultimately led to this successful outcome.”
“The Nigerian Army also deserves special commendation for showing that with courage, determination and commitment, criminal elements can be suppressed and security restored in our communities,” Sani said.
Kaduna state, which borders Nigeria's capital Abuja, has struggled with recurring kidnappings for ransom by bandits and has seen several mass kidnappings in recent years.
