In the story of a young girl from the highlands, the journey to the city carries with it the desire to change her life and the wish to one day return to her homeland, to sow knowledge among the vast hills and white clouds.
Besides my family and teachers, I decided to tell this good news to Mr. Nguyen Binh Nam, Head of the Friends Club - the person who helped me study with peace of mind with the project "Going to school on the mountain".
The information Hau sent at 7:46 p.m. on July 21, in addition to the admission results, also had a short message that expressed joy and gratitude: "Uncle Nam".
Simple words, sent from a small, remote peak in the middle of the Truong Son mountain range, where every step to school means crossing streams and wading through passes.
Hau is the second child in a family of three children. Her father died early and her mother worked hard in the fields all year round. Her journey to learn to read and write was a series of difficult days.
During her high school years, to get to Nam Tra My Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities, Hau had to walk more than 2 hours through the forest. Her daily meals consisted of only wild vegetables and stream fish, but in her heart she always dreamed of becoming a teacher.
Mr. Nguyen Binh Nam still clearly remembers the time he met Hau in 2022, when he was one of the first two Xe Dang students selected for support by the "Going to School on the Mountain" project.
He said that with his excellent student results for many years in a row, he knew Hau was a precious seed that needed to be cared for and cultivated. Since then, the “Friends Who Love Each Other” Club has accompanied Hau with monthly support, school supplies and encouraging messages.
The news of the clumsy girl Hau going to university was like a ray of sunshine in the middle of a rainy day in the great forest. That joy spread quickly from the roof of Ngoc Nam to the neighboring roofs, seeping through each group of Xe Dang students who were boarding, making teachers and friends all proud.
Because in a land where finishing 12th grade is rare, having someone pass university entrance exam becomes a great joy for the village.
As for Hau's mother, when she heard the news that her daughter had passed the university entrance exam, she cried silently with happiness. Having worked hard all her life, she probably never dreamed that her daughter would become a university student.
And now, passing the university entrance exam is no longer Hau's dream alone, but the sweet fruit of many seasons of farming, the hope of the whole family.
Perhaps, in the near future, the day Hau leaves Ngoc Nam to go to school in the city will be a special day. Over the phone, she talked about her dream of living in a dormitory, being given job opportunities to support herself on the long journey ahead.
She said she might miss home, miss the days of following her mother to the fields, miss the slopes on the way to school, but "will try to study well to not let down her mother, teachers and those who believed in her".
