
According to statistics just released by the Customs Department, in June, Vietnam imported more than 18,800 cars of all kinds, with a value of about 407 million USD. Notably, imported trucks to Vietnam increased dramatically, reaching 2,732 units, up 40% in volume and 35.2% in value compared to May. This sudden increase mainly came from two main sources: China and Thailand.
In contrast to the truck segment, cars with less than 9 seats decreased slightly, reaching more than 14,000 units. Other types of cars also reached only 2,067 imported units, worth 84.2 million USD, down more than 27% in both volume and value compared to the previous month. Although 94% of goods originating from China still account for, the downward trend in imports of this type of car shows caution from businesses or changes in domestic demand.
By the end of June, Vietnam had imported a total of 102,817 complete cars, up 38.3% over the same period last year. Of which, cars with less than 9 seats accounted for the majority with 78,345 units, up 29.4%; trucks reached 12,362 units, up 124.3%.
Along with complete vehicles, auto parts and components continue to play an important role in the supply chain of Vietnam’s auto industry. In the first 6 months of the year, imports of this group of products reached 2.64 billion USD, up 28% over the same period last year, of which China continued to be the largest supplier, followed by Thailand, South Korea, Japan, India and Indonesia.
The strong growth of trucks and a large amount of imported components shows the resilience of the logistics, construction and transportation industries, and reflects businesses' expectations for economic recovery and public investment in the second half of the year.
With the current growth momentum, 2025 is expected to set a new record for , especially in the context of the domestic market increasingly demanding product diversity, high performance and fuel economy.
Regarding domestically consumed automobiles, according to a report by the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA), sales of the entire market in June reached 31,977 vehicles of all types. This figure increased by 9% compared to May and increased sharply by 20% compared to the same period last year.
In the first 6 months of this year, the total number of cars sold reached 163,021 units of all kinds, an increase of 21% over the same period last year. Of which, the number of cars sold increased by 18%; commercial vehicles increased by 28% and specialized vehicles increased by 28% compared to the first 6 months of 2024.
Among VAMA member companies, Toyota continues to be the leading name in sales, followed by Ford, Mitsubishi, Mazda, KIA and Honda.
