Valuable images and documents about Dien Bien Phu - Golden history

70 years have passed, but the heroic pages of Dien Bien Phu victory are still a shining milestone in the history of building and defending our nation.

On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of Dien Bien Phu Victory Day (May 7, 1954 - May 7, 2024), Can Tho City Museum in collaboration with Dien Bien Phu Historical Victory Museum organized the photo exhibition "Dien Bien Phu - Golden History".

"Dien Bien Phu - Golden History" with more than 80 images and documents of historical value, introduces to visitors the heroic history of the nation in the resistance war against foreign invaders.

The images and documents are divided into 3 parts. Part 1 shows the Party's and President Ho Chi Minh's policies against the plots and actions of French colonialists in the Dien Bien Phu campaign in 1954.

After the August Revolution, not willing to accept defeat, in September 1945, the French colonialists returned to invade Vietnam and provoked in the South. And this was President Ho Chi Minh's call for national resistance on December 19, 1946.

Upon receiving news that the main force of Vietnam was marching to the Northwest, on November 20, 1953, French paratroopers occupied Dien Bien Phu.

Looking at the image of Uncle Ho assigning tasks to General Vo Nguyen Giap (January 1954), Tran Hoan My (wearing glasses, left) - a 7th grade student at Thoi Thuan Secondary and High School, Thot Not District, Can Tho City - said that the images and documents in this exhibition have helped My and other students understand more about historical knowledge, absorb useful content and valuable documents that are difficult to find in books.

Part 2 depicts the Dien Bien Phu Campaign. To gain victory in the opening battle on March 13, 1954, many of our officers and soldiers heroically sacrificed themselves. Typically, hero Phan Dinh Giot used his body to fill the loophole, creating conditions for his comrades to charge and destroy the stronghold.

The French fired flares in the sky of Dien Bien Phu. The first special tactic we used in that Campaign was the “Encroachment” tactic. Our troops used “bows” woven from straw to ensure the safety of those lying behind, digging trenches to gradually encroach on the enemy. At the appropriate distance, our troops used howitzers to capture a number of enemy bunkers and then chose the right moment to suddenly open fire, leaving the enemy no time to react.

In part 3 - Dien Bien in the new day, 70 years have passed, the memories of the heroic Dien Bien, of the heroic people in the Dien Bien campaign still live forever in the hearts of today's and tomorrow's young generations. The photo exhibition “Dien Bien Phu - Golden History” aims to propagate and educate the younger generation about national pride, absolute trust in the leadership of the Party; continue to promote the tradition of patriotism, the will of self-reliance, self-reliance and independence of the nation. The exhibition will serve visitors at the Hung Kings Temple in Can Tho City until May 20.
