"Dang Thuy Tram and the Third Diary" was published nationwide in the second quarter of 2025, compiled by author Dang Kim Tram, with many articles depicting a picture of a time when people turned to the Fatherland, about a typical Hanoi intellectual family, with a daughter who volunteered to "go to B", entered the fiercest battlefield and then sacrificed, leaving behind war diary entries that touched the hearts of many people.

Dang Kim Tram is the younger sister of female doctor, martyr, and Hero of the Armed Forces Dang Thuy Tram. She has translated many English books, written for newspapers, and is the main person in charge of Dang Thuy Tram's posthumous works, compiled into books, along with many other related documents.

The childhood, adolescence and a part of the beautiful youth of Dang Thuy Tram are recounted, along with memories with family and friends, in the heart of the peaceful capital Hanoi, with a heart turned towards the southern region still suffering from bombs and bullets. An important part of the book is the unpublished manuscript of female doctor Dang Thuy Tram, including the "third diary" and some letters with family and friends.

Dang Thuy Tram was born on November 26, 1942 at Thanh Hoa Provincial Hospital. Her birth name was Dang Thi Tinh Thuy, meaning the pure water of Buddhism. Later, it was changed to Dang Thuy Tram, and at home, she was often called Thuy.

Author Dang Kim Tram recalls through the article "Ancient house in Hue citadel": "In the movie 'The Trail on the East Sea', Mr. Tu Thang, one of the legendary captains of the Ship Without Number, told about a female doctor from Hanoi with a gentle voice that the group met when the ship was sunk by the enemy and they drifted to the coast of Quang Ngai. Then the nostalgia for Hanoi, the romantic memories of Hanoi that she wrote in her diary, made many people assume that she was from Hanoi, my family was originally from Hanoi. But that's not true. My father was from Hue, and my mother was from Quang Nam. And my parents did not gather in the North but only started moving to Hanoi to live since 1956...".

Memories of "Sister Thuy" by her younger sister named Dang Hien Tram depict: "She is gentle and capable, managing everything in the family. She is also good at studying and singing, always the core of youth movements. And she is very beautiful, I don't know how to describe how beautiful she is, but I am sure she is because everyone acknowledges it.

My uncles and aunts kept telling my parents that having a daughter like Thuy Tram would make their life complete. My sister does not have gorgeous features, but her face is round and bright like the full moon, her skin is white and smooth, her eyes are wet and black. Especially her smile: a smile that contains gentleness, passion for life, and sincerity that brings peace to everyone...".

Through those diary pages emerges the image of a Dang Thuy Tram full of femininity, with youthful energy, with a heart filled with love for her country, family, relatives, friends and love between couples.

Dang Thuy Tram's diary is full of ideal aspirations and spiritual beauty.
Dang Thuy Tram's diary is full of ideal aspirations and spiritual beauty.

The romantic, delicate and passionate female student of the University of Medicine at that time, while enthusiastically studying and training in a safe and favorable environment, was always full of worries about ideals, about the meaning of life, about the dream of curing patients, about the mission of a citizen when the country was divided, about the courage to face challenges and injustice, with a Danko spirit without hesitation. Then she determined to commit to the southern battlefield, along with many young people from the north, not afraid of sacrifice and hardship.

One thing that once caused much curiosity and controversy was Dang Thuy Tram's failed love affair with M., a talented southern soldier. In this book, it is also re-examined from the most honest and "real" perspective.

The latter part of the book recounts the journey of Dang Thuy Tram's two war diaries returning to where they belong after 35 years, thrilling and touching; stories after "Dang Thuy Tram's Diary" was published, such as the story of finding the first person from the "other side" who read Dang Thuy Tram's diary and prevented it from being burned, the trip to the US to receive the two lost diaries, the story of the great mother of the great daughter... Dang Thuy Tram and the third diary is a book that when we read it, we remember a person like many other Vietnamese people, who sacrificed for the Fatherland, for peace, with the full ideals and love of immortal youth.

The book has many touching excerpts from Dang Thuy Tram's diary before leaving for B: "19/0: The first days of the cold season, still sunny but still cold. Who does the cold remind me of? Studying the history of the Party, the 9 years of long resistance war, the Party has led us through the abyss. Despite the difficulties, we still won, let alone today, our people have grown up like Phu Dong Thien Vuong, with us there is a whole world supporting us wholeheartedly, we will definitely win. That belief is like life. However, every time I think of the South - 20 years of tireless fighting, so many people have fallen. I am in so much pain, something is tearing at my heart.

The South! There is also my beloved one there, he has fought tirelessly, when he returns, will he still be there? I don't believe in fate, he will return, he will definitely return...".

"I want to live more solidly, not drown in pain and longing, and so I have folded this small notebook. Taking notes... how can I not write down the thoughts of a heart! Well then, let's study hard, be content to live in the love of our parents, in the affection of our friends. Be happy for the joy of the collective, of the group. I'm just smiling, they are playing around me, so mischievous, but also cute...".

"Dear mother, I promise that on the day of victory I will return, I will live forever with my family - I will regain the happy days and I will be happy enough to make up for the days apart."

According to the representative of the Vietnam Women's Publishing House, the unit and family may coordinate memorial activities on the occasion of the 55th anniversary of the death of female doctor Dang Thuy Tram (June 22, 1970) in Quang Ngai and have activities to spread books in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City; coordinate with some newspapers to publish the posthumous work of Dang Thuy Tram in installments.
