According to Xinhua News Agency, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on August 17 that she and other European leaders will accompany Ukrainian President Zelensky to Washington (USA) to meet President Trump.
"At the request of President Zelensky of Ukraine, I will participate in a meeting with President Trump and other European leaders at the White House on August 18," von der Leyen wrote on the social media platform X.
RT reported that in addition to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, the leaders of Germany, France, Finland, the UK, Italy and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte will arrive in Washington on August 18.
According to a source from the German newspaper Bild, President Trump will have a private meeting with Ukrainian leader Zelensky before European leaders join a working lunch and lengthy negotiations.
In a post on X on August 17, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that he had an “important meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Brussels.” He added that Europe had provided “significant support to Ukraine in the context of the upcoming meeting with President Trump.”
In his statement, President Zelensky reiterated that Kiev insists on a ceasefire as a precondition for further peace talks. However, Russia opposes this and supports a comprehensive peace deal, arguing that Ukraine would use any ceasefire to replenish its arms supplies and regroup its army.
Earlier, President Zelensky announced on Telegram on August 16 that he would arrive in Washington on August 18 for direct talks with President Trump.
"President Trump informed me about the meeting with the Russian leader, about the main points of the conversation. I will discuss with President Trump all the details of ending the conflict in Washington on August 18. Thank you for your invitation," President Zelensky said.
