Bergson and Manuel Hidalgo have both joined the Malaysian Premier League since 2021. They are in their fourth year with the country. Neither of them has Malaysian blood, so according to FIFA regulations, they must live for at least five consecutive years to be eligible for Malaysian citizenship. It is expected that by early next year, both will meet the residency requirement.
From now until they are eligible, Malaysia will gradually promote the naturalization procedures for Manuel Hidalgo and Bergson. The owner of Johor DT Club, the head of the "naturalization project" of Malaysian football, confirmed: "If everything goes well, Manuel Hidalgo and Bergson will be naturalized. Both of them will soon be eligible to live in Malaysia for at least 5 years."

These are two dangerous attacking players in the Malaysian National Championship, currently playing for the strongest club in the country, Johor DT. Manuel Hidalgo has just been sent to Kuala Lumpur City on loan while Bergson is still the main striker of Johor DT. Last season, he scored 32 goals.
Last week, this striker scored again to reach the milestone of 106 goals, becoming the player with the most goals in the history of the Malaysian National Championship (sharing the record with Putra Mahayuddin). But if the legendary Putra Mahayuddin took more than 400 matches to score 106 goals, Bergson only needed... 85 matches. His efficiency is up to 1.2 goals/match. In the near future, Bergson will soon dethrone his predecessor.
Bergson is a "killer" in the penalty area. Meanwhile, Hidalgo is a midfielder who is agile, technical and has good dribbling ability. Once the two South American stars are naturalized, Malaysia will be even more formidable in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers. Before that, they already had Rodrigo Holgado, Joao Figueiredo, Imanol Machuca... who are high-class strikers. Now with Bergson and Hidalgo, Malaysia is truly more confident in dominating Southeast Asia.
