Khmer Pentatonic Music of Soc Trang Province Sets Vietnam Record

According to traditional regulations, the Five-tone Music (also known as Phlêng Pin Piet) was only used when there were funerals, festivals, traditional New Year's Eve at the pagoda and funerals according to traditional Khmer customs and rituals, and then kept at the pagoda.

Nowadays, due to the development needs of society, the material and spiritual life of the people is increasingly improved, the pentatonic orchestra has also expanded its scope of activities; appeared and participated in serving in professional singing - dancing - music performances; combined with a number of other musical instruments to harmonize music ; used in stage plays; in traditional festivals... in the Khmer community.

The five-tone music of the Khmer people in the South in general and Soc Trang province in particular has historical - cultural values, spiritual values, ethics, artistic - aesthetic values and community cohesion. Up to now, the five-tone music has affirmed itself and constantly adapted to survive and develop to suit new conditions and circumstances.

In recent years, with the attention of the Party and the State on ethnic policies; the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism has invested funds to purchase many pentatonic orchestras to support Khmer clubs and pagodas in the province, organized many training classes, and taught various types of national intangible cultural heritage, including the art of performing folk music of pentatonic music; at the same time, trained and nurtured Khmer children to have more basic knowledge and understanding of this unique art form.

In recognition of the efforts and endeavors in preserving the national intangible cultural heritage of the Five-tone Folk Performing Art, after a period of teaching, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Soc Trang province has gathered over 200 artisans, artists and musicians to practice advanced rhythms and pieces; to organize the largest performance of this unique art form in Vietnam.

Accordingly, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Soc Trang province coordinated with the Vietnam Record Organization VietKings to set the Vietnam Record for "The largest scale Khmer Pentatonic music performance program in Soc Trang province in Vietnam".

The representative of the Vietnam Record Organization said that Ngu am music is a popular and long-standing traditional music form of the Khmer people in the South; through the process of formation, existence and development, this folk performing art form has preserved and imbued with many great and very special values and meanings.

Setting the record will contribute to promoting and introducing local cultural heritages to domestic and foreign tourists.

The representative of the Vietnam Record Organization noted that the performance had 20 orchestras, with a total of 200 artists, musicians, and actors participating in the performance, meeting the conditions in the record registration dossier. The record will be officially announced on November 13, 2024 within the framework of the opening of the 6th Ooc Om Boc - Ngo Boat Race Festival in Soc Trang province, Mekong Delta region and the 1st Soc Trang Culture, Sports and Tourism Week, 2024.
