Russia claims to have 'super weapon'

VTC NewsVTC News27/11/2024

“We have the means, including superweapons, to deliver a powerful response,” Russian Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko said at a council meeting on November 27, but did not specify which “superweapons.”

Matvienko's statement came after Russia test-fired an Oreshnik ballistic missile at Ukraine's defense industry facility in Dnipro last week, in response to Kiev's use of Western-supplied missiles against targets in Russia.

The Russian Federation Council Speaker described the successful test of the Oreshnik as “a significant geopolitical action of our time” and that the parties had received “a strong signal”. However, she stressed that the use of the Oreshnik “is not an ultimatum or a threat, as the Western media has tried to portray it”.

“This is our response to the continued escalation from the West and the steps that have led to attacks on Russian facilities with long-range weapons. The use of the Oreshnik missile demonstrates our readiness for any development of the conflict,” Matvienko said.

On November 17, the Biden administration also allowed Ukraine to use US-made weapons to strike deep into Russian territory, a significant reversal of Washington's policy in the Ukraine-Russia conflict.

On November 20, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that Ukraine launched six ATACMS ballistic missiles at a military facility in the Bryansk region deep inside Russian territory. Moscow's air defenses shot down five of the missiles and damaged the remaining missile, whose debris fell and caused a fire at the facility, but the fire was quickly extinguished.

On November 21, Russia responded by test-launching an Oreshnik ballistic missile at Ukraine's defense industrial facility in Dnipro.

Russian President Putin declared the test launch successful, and said that current Western air defense systems cannot intercept the Oreshnik missile at a speed of Mach 10 - about 12,300 km/h.

Mr Putin warned that Moscow reserved the right to attack countries that participated in and supported Kiev using weapons it had supplied to Ukraine to attack Russian territory, explaining the use of Oreshnik missiles in response to "aggressive actions by NATO members" supporting Ukraine.
