NATO wants Europe to increase weapons production to support Ukraine

Speaking to reporters on February 10, Mr. Jens Stoltenberg, Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), asked Europe to increase weapons production to support Ukraine. Mr. Stoltenberg's comments were made in the context of Ukraine calling for additional ammunition and military support as the conflict is about to enter its third year.

NATO needs to reorganize and accelerate the expansion of its defense industry, increase support for Ukraine and ensure arms supplies to the bloc, Jens Stoltenberg said. The call comes ahead of a meeting of NATO defense ministers scheduled to take place in Brussels on February 15, with a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group being the main event.

Last year, the EU promised to deliver 1 million artillery shells to Ukraine by the end of March 2024, according to Germany's DW. However, the EU recently announced that only more than half of that number will be delivered ahead of schedule, meaning that it will have to move weapons production to a new phase. According to Mr. Stoltenberg, there is currently no military threat to NATO member countries, but if they unite and invest in security measures, the bloc will be able to deal well with any provocation.

Earlier, DW also commented that Europe has begun to change its strategy. NATO generals are preparing for the growing risk of conflict with Russia and are calling for investment in deterrence. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and President Joe Biden on February 9 called on US lawmakers to approve a long-delayed military aid package for Ukraine.
