Improve the quality of summer activities for children

Thanks to timely changes in the way of organizing activities, the summer activities of children in Ward 5, Dong Ha City have become more crowded and exciting - Photo: S.Đ

In many places across the province, especially in urban areas, summer activities are only maintained due to reasons such as limited funding for organization, lack of youth union cadres at the grassroots level; low awareness of youth and support from parents... In order for summer activities to become attractive and attract a large number of students to participate, there needs to be many innovations in both content and organization as well as closer coordination between families, schools and localities.

full of difficulties

According to the number of summer activity transfer papers that the Youth Union of Ward 5, Dong Ha City received from schools, the ward has about 2,000 students from grades 1 to 9 coming to summer activities in the summer of 2025. However, each time there is a regular activity, the actual number of students participating is not as large as that.

According to Mr. Nguyen Sy Dat, Secretary of the Youth Union of Ward 5, all the neighborhood youth unions have received summer activity permits and organized activities from June 1 to 15. Specifically, each month there can be 1-2 sessions, in each session, the youth unions organize a number of collective activities, mainly folk games to create a lively and joyful atmosphere for the children. In addition, the youth unions can organize activities to propagate and disseminate legaleducation .

Basically, the summer activities in Ward 5 have achieved positive results, but there are still many problems that need to be "solved". "In recent years, summer activities in the locality have encountered some difficulties such as: many children after the end of the school year are sent on vacation by their parents, returning to their hometowns so they cannot participate; some parents are busy so they do not know the time of the neighborhood's summer activities, or cannot take their children. Besides, most young people today are not "keen" on going to summer activities but only want to go to amusement parks, play video games or watch TV and phones", Mr. Dat worried.

Nowadays, not only students are indifferent to summer activities, but most parents are also not interested in this activity. When summer comes, instead of letting their children play and entertain, many people register their children for extra classes, gifted subjects... with a rather dense schedule, leaving them with no time to participate in summer activities in the locality. On the other hand, many facilities lack a team of qualified youth union officers to guide and accompany young people throughout the process of practicing, playing, and participating in summer activities; facilities at the activity locations are still lacking; the content of the activities is not rich...

In fact, the more rural areas, the more exciting the atmosphere of summer activities is compared to urban areas. Although there is a large and enthusiastic participation of children, in many rural, remote and isolated areas across the province, grassroots union cadres are faced with other difficult problems.

Secretary of Gio My Commune Youth Union, Gio Linh District Mai Thi Thuan said that in the summer of 2025, the commune union received 629 students and 215 union members and young people to participate in summer activities in the locality. It is encouraging that the majority of students and union members actively participated. However, what worries Ms. Thuan the most is that the budget for organizing summer activities is very limited, mainly socialized; the number of students and union members and young people is quite large, but the local entertainment and activity venues are still few, simple and cramped, not meeting the needs. In addition, some union officials are limited in the skills to organize summer activities in an attractive and engaging way.

Struggling to find a new direction

Mr. Nguyen Sy Dat said that in order to improve the quality of summer activities and attract more young people to participate, since the beginning of June, the ward youth union has directed the youth union branches to change their thinking about organizing activities, suggesting inviting some talented teachers from schools to attend summer activities to guide sports skills, singing, dancing, etc.; organizing a variety of folk games, sports competitions, art competitions, etc. "In order to create excitement for children when participating in activities, the ward youth union has directed the youth union branches to proactively prepare some quiz questions with prizes related to historical and social knowledge," said Mr. Dat.

Since the beginning of June, Gio My Commune Youth Union has coordinated with the commune police to propagate drug prevention to union members; directed the branches to organize Green Sunday, Golden Bell contest... Gio My Commune Youth Union Secretary Mai Thi Thuan shared: "In order to improve the quality of summer activities, the commune youth union has increased the implementation of collective activities, helping students in difficult circumstances; regularly closely follow to grasp the needs and aspirations of young people, then plan to implement summer activities suitable for their age, interests and passions".

Since the beginning of summer 2025, the Provincial Youth Union Standing Committee and the Provincial Young Pioneer Council have issued a plan to organize summer activities for children in Quang Tri province and directed all levels of the Youth Union and Young Pioneers to synchronously deploy activities to gather a large number of children to participate in activities, contributing to creating a healthy, practical and useful playground for children, especially children in remote, isolated and disadvantaged areas.

Standing Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Youth Union Pham Xuan Khanh said: Every year, the Provincial Youth Union and the Provincial Youth Union Council always actively and proactively coordinate with relevant sectors to organize training courses, disseminate knowledge on working methods with children, and skills in organizing summer activities for grassroots youth union cadres. Coordinate to organize free swimming classes; coordinate to mobilize funds to donate warning signs of danger in deep water areas; donate life jackets to children in disadvantaged areas...

Along with that, regular inspections of the Youth Union and youth movements are carried out, including the topic of inspecting summer activities in residential areas to grasp and orient some summer activities in residential areas. In addition, the Youth Union and Team chapters at all levels have deployed the construction of "Children's playgrounds" in 100% of communes, wards and towns in the whole province; organized free summer tutoring classes for children...

“To solve problems related to summer activities for young people, the Provincial Youth Union Standing Committee continues to promote propaganda and education to raise awareness and responsibility of all levels, sectors, socio-political organizations, each family and the entire community.

Promote good models and creative ways of organizing summer activities; closely coordinate with local agencies, departments, and organizations and proactively mobilize resources from society, philanthropists, and businesses to support facilities and funding for organizing summer activities.

At the same time, direct all levels of the Youth Union and Teams to effectively monitor, inspect, evaluate, summarize, and promptly draw lessons to improve the quality of summer activities in the coming time," added Mr. Pham Xuan Khanh.
