On August 8, government agencies, libraries, swimming pools and other services in Washington, DC, USA had to close early to prevent risks from storms and tornadoes.

The National Weather Service says the Washington, D.C., area is under a tornado watch and is at risk of severe damage from high winds, severe hail and even tornadoes, with 10 states now under tornado warnings and watches, from Tennessee to New York.

Earlier, heavy rain and storms on the East Coast of the United States killed at least two people and delayed or canceled thousands of flights. According to the flight tracking app FlightAware, as of the night of August 7, more than 2,600 flights were canceled and nearly 7,900 were delayed. More than 1.1 million households and businesses lost power on August 7. Due to bad weather, the White House had to move up the departure date of President Joe Biden's business trip to the states of Arizona, New Mexico and Utah by 90 minutes.
