US helps Vietnam overcome damage after Typhoon Yagi

Through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the funding will be distributed to humanitarian partners to provide cash assistance, shelter, clean water, sanitation, and other support.

This sharing contributes to the disaster relief efforts directed by the Vietnamese Government that are being urgently deployed across the country.

This $1 million grant builds on long-standing support to the Government of Vietnam and the Vietnam Red Cross Society to help build climate resilience and enhance disaster response capacity for communities across the country.

Over the past five years, the U.S. Mission to Vietnam, through USAID, has provided $7.7 million in emergency and disaster response assistance, including storm and flood recovery and capacity building for disaster response teams across the country.

On September 7, Typhoon Yagi made landfall in the north of Vietnam. It was one of the strongest storms recorded in Vietnam in decades, causing severe damage in 26 provinces and cities. As of September 10, the storm and subsequent heavy rains had caused floods, landslides and destruction of many infrastructure works, killing 143 people, injuring more than 800 and leaving 58 missing. As of September 9, the storm had damaged or destroyed about 48,000 houses and about 184,000 hectares of agricultural production.

With heavy rains forecast to continue in the coming days, USAID disaster response experts will continue to monitor humanitarian needs, working closely with local emergency response agencies and partners on the ground. USAID humanitarian experts on the ground are assessing damage to ensure U.S. assistance reaches those most in need.

For decades, USAID has worked with the Government of Vietnam to strengthen the country’s capacity to respond to, prevent, and reduce the risk of natural disasters. This partnership aims to improve the disaster preparedness of communities across the country as the frequency and intensity of natural disasters increase.
