DNVN - On January 7, Meta faced opposition from researchers when it announced it would stop its third-party fact-checking program in the US, due to concerns that it could increase misinformation.

In the announcement, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Meta will stop using fact-checking programs run by independent organizations in the U.S. Instead, the company will roll out a “Community Notes” feature in the coming months and expand the model this year, allowing users to add context to controversial posts.

Social media platform X is also adopting a similar notes feature, but many researchers remain skeptical about the tool's ability to reduce misinformation.

Assessing Meta's move, Mr. Ross Burley, co-founder of the Center for Information Resilience, called it a major step back in the context of the rapid increase in misinformation and harmful content.

Professor Michael Wagner of the University of Wisconsin-Madison said that Meta's decision to let users monitor and deal with misinformation on its platform is an act of avoiding social responsibility. Meanwhile, Republican Senator Marsha Blackburn said that Meta is trying to avoid being controlled.

In contrast, US President-elect Donald Trump expressed his support for Meta's decision.

Third-party fact-checking programs have previously helped reduce the frequency of false content appearing in user feeds. People who attempt to share posts that are flagged as false receive a warning with a specific reason.

According to a 2023 survey by the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN), Meta’s program and external funding are “the primary sources of revenue” for 137 fact-checking organizations in multiple countries. Meta’s decision is expected to impact the revenue streams of these organizations in the United States. IFCN Director Angie Holan said the policy change will also reduce social media users’ access to accurate information.
