Previously, Eugenie Bouchard (31 years old) announced that the 2025 Canada Open in her hometown of Montreal would be the last tournament of her career. Therefore, the defeat to her junior Bencic also marked the official end of Bouchard's tennis career.

In the first round, Bouchard defeated the unknown Emiliana Arango 2-0. She joked that she would not retire if she won the 2025 Canada Open.

But both Bouchard and the crowd in Montreal know that won't happen. Any match Bouchard makes at the Canadian Open could be her last.

And that moment came when Bouchard suffered a defeat against Bencic. Perhaps the Montreal audience had a premonition of the farewell, so they filled the IGA stadium.

"Let's Go Genie!" was repeatedly chanted from the stands, becoming louder and louder as Bouchard was about to lose to Bencic. Not to mention, Bouchard received constant applause throughout the match.

Bouchard gave an emotional speech in response to the support of her home crowd. The 31-year-old born and raised in Montreal even burst into tears. "It's very special to play my last match here in Montreal, on this court, in front of you," Bouchard said, choking up.

"I remember as a kid sitting in this arena, hoping and dreaming that one day I would become a professional tennis player and play in the Canadian Open. And now I'm playing my last match in Montreal. It feels like a full circle moment," Bouchard said.

When asked about her plans after retiring from tennis, Bouchard said she wanted to sleep in, travel and think about what to do next.

"I felt like I missed something by not going to college, by not going to school," Bouchard said regretfully.

"Getting into television is definitely something I'd love to do, so that could be the next step. I mean (pauses)....are any of you hiring? (laughs) I don't even know how to write....(pauses for words) what do you call that..." Bouchard wanted to say "resume" but couldn't remember because she was so emotional.

After a moment of confusion, Bouchard continued: "I don't even have that (resume-reporter). Maybe my agent will help me make one. I'm not used to doing this."

Bouchard was born and raised in Montreal (Canada) , once reached world number 5 and was expected to be the "new Sharapova".

However, Bouchard's tennis career has not progressed as expected. She fell in the locker room and suffered a concussion at the 2025 US Open. Bouchard's career has been on the decline since then. In the past 5 years, Bouchard has not reached the main draw of a Grand Slam and has continuously dropped in the WTA rankings.
