On the morning of June 24, administrators simultaneously posted announcements that their Facebook groups had been restored after a mass “crash” incident the previous afternoon. The incident occurred on many groups from domestic to international, regardless of category, from shopping, entertainment to professional communities.

Meta spokesperson Andy Stone confirmed the company was aware of the issue and was working to resolve it. “We are aware of a technical issue affecting some Facebook Groups and are working to resolve it,” Stone told TechCrunch .

Previously, Facebook had repeatedly locked and then reopened groups for users in Vietnam. Many hypotheses have been put forward for the collective disappearance of these groups, including social network errors, copyright violations, community standards violations, or most recently, AI-induced sleuthing.

A Reddit user provided an update on the situation. In addition to Vietnam, thousands of Facebook groups from Indonesia, Canada, the US, Thailand and many other countries are also experiencing similar issues. Admins are only receiving vague messages such as “dangerous individuals and organizations”. Some are forced to log out of their personal accounts.

The group closures were swift, without warning, and without an opportunity for appeal. The reasons given by social media for the closures were also unusual. One animal photography group was flagged for “nude photos.” Another admin expressed frustration that his group was shut down for community violations a few years ago.

The groups are now back after repeated complaints. However, many groups have had their names changed and will have to wait 28 days for them to be restored. Admins have been quick to notify users, and encourage interaction once they receive the information.

Based on observations from the community, another possible cause of the problem is that the AI moderation system has been affected by bad actors, or overreacted to sensitive keywords or images, even if posted by normal members. Therefore, some administrators choose to temporarily suspend group activities, to monitor the situation, and wait until the social network stabilizes again.

According to TechCrunch, the wave of account bans has spread to many other social networks. Besides Facebook, platforms such as Pinterest, Tumblr and Instagram have faced many complaints about mass account suspensions in the past few weeks. Users suspect that automated AI moderation systems are to blame.

Pinterest acknowledged the error, saying the mass bans were due to an internal error, but denied that AI was to blame. Tumblr said the issue was related to testing a new content filtering system, but did not clarify whether the system used AI.

The account loss incident has caused panic and disruption for many people on the platform. Currently, users are spreading a petition, collecting signatures asking Meta to address the problem.
