South Korean chemical tanker capsizes, 7 dead

Japan's NHK on March 20 quoted a coast guard source as confirming that seven people died when a South Korean-flagged chemical tanker capsized off the coast of Yamaguchi Prefecture, western Japan.

NHK reported that the Keoyoung Sun reported a listing at around 7 a.m. local time (5 a.m. Vietnam time) due to bad weather. The ship sent out a distress signal requesting assistance.

At the time, there were 11 crew members on board, including 8 Indonesians, 2 South Koreans and 1 Chinese. Search and rescue teams have rescued 9 people, of whom 7 have been confirmed dead. Rescue efforts are continuing to find the remaining 2 people.

According to NHK, the ship was carrying 980 tons of acrylic acid, but no chemical leaks have been detected.
