Lao Cai: Women's Union members help each other get rich from the model of growing mulberry and raising silkworms

Thanks to the development of the "mulberry growing and silkworm raising" model, many women members in Phuc Khanh commune, Lao Cai province, have jobs and stable income on the spot, effectively becoming rich.

Every day, Ms. Ngo Thi Dien in Coc Khieng village, Phuc Khanh commune, is always busy with work in her family's mulberry field, taking care of, weeding, and picking mulberry leaves to feed the silkworms, making her always busy. As a pioneer in the model of growing mulberry and raising silkworms, from the initial experimental batches of silkworms, Ms. Dien's family has now developed a scale of more than 2 hectares of mulberry, raising 10 silkworm rings each year, harvesting about 200 quintals of cocoons, reaching a value of more than 200 million VND/year.

Ms. Dien said: “I started developing the mulberry growing model to raise silkworms in 2018. At first, I encountered difficulties in technical care, but after a while, I grasped the technique, so it became more favorable. The mulberry growing model to raise silkworms takes more time, but gives higher productivity than other local crops, especially since traders come to my house to buy the products as soon as they are produced, so I am very confident about the product output.”

Raising silkworms requires meticulousness and strict adherence to environmental conditions. In particular, it is necessary to always ensure that the silkworm house is clean and the temperature is moderate for silkworms to develop. When feeding, the mulberry leaves must be green and clean, ensuring the nutrients for silkworms to spin silk and form quality cocoons, with a bright white color. If the mulberry leaves fed to the silkworms are contaminated with pesticides, the entire batch of silkworms may be ruined, said Chi Dien.

Not only developing for herself, Ms. Dien also mobilized other members in the village to participate in the model of growing mulberry and raising silkworms to develop the economy . Up to now, in Coc Khieng village, there have been 15 families of women's association members participating. The mulberry growing area in the locality has increased to 12 hectares, and in the coming time, the mulberry growing area will continue to increase, because all households are strongly developing this model.

Up to now, Ms. Dien continues to provide seeds, seedlings and farming techniques to local women, thanks to which families participating in the mulberry growing and silkworm raising model are all favorable and do not encounter risks.

Ms. Vi Thi Tuyen said: “My family has also just joined the model of growing mulberry and raising silkworms. Ms. Dien has supported us a lot, from breeding animals, seedlings, to planting techniques, harvesting mulberry, caring for silkworms, and exploiting cocoons. Ms. Dien has given us all the necessary instructions, so the women's union members trust her a lot when participating in this model.”

Ms. Vu Thi Trang Nhung, President of the Women's Union of Phuc Khanh Commune, shared: "Member Ngo Thi Dien is a positive example in developing the model of growing mulberry and raising silkworms. After achieving success, Ms. Dien actively spread her model to many other female members, so that they can participate in production and get rich together in their hometown. Therefore, the Women's Union of Phuc Khanh Commune highly appreciates the model of growing mulberry and raising silkworms that Ms. Dien and other female members are developing."

In the coming time, Phuc Khanh commune will continue to promote the development of the local silkworm farming model.

Mulberry farming and silkworm raising have advantages over other jobs, which is that women can work on the spot, do not need to go far from home, but still have a guaranteed and stable income. Some elderly people can still participate in production labor, such as picking mulberry leaves, taking care of silkworms, so we think this is a very suitable and useful economic development model in the locality, Ms. Nhung added.

In the coming time, the leaders of Phuc Khanh commune will also continue to support women to expand mulberry cultivation areas to develop silkworm farming, and at the same time invite businesses to cooperate in development. This is a profession that is suitable for local practice, so it is necessary to promote to arouse these good values, said Mr. Pham Anh Tuan, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Phuc Khanh commune.
