Before the AVC Women's Volleyball Nations Cup 2025 kicked off, many experts said that the Vietnamese women's team had enough "heavenly time, geographical advantage and harmony" to complete the "hat-trick" of championship titles at the tournament. Not only because of the professional and force factors, but also because this tournament was held in Dong Anh ( Hanoi ), a locality known for its people's passionate love for volleyball.
In fact, the matches of the Vietnamese women's team, from the group stage to the final, always had a lot of spectators coming to Dong Anh Stadium to cheer for coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet and his team. It was the "fueling" of the "7th player" in the stands that helped Thanh Thuy and her teammates on the field play brilliantly to win convincingly.
The “golden girls” of Vietnamese volleyball have had a memorable and convincing journey. The Vietnamese women’s team won 3-0 against Hong Kong (China), Chinese Taipei, India and Australia to take the top spot in the group.
Despite some difficulties in the second set of the semi-final against Kazakhstan (the opponent in the 2024 final), the team still won 3-1. In the final, against a Philippines that is making great progress, Coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet's students won 3-0 to successfully defend the "queen title".
“We adjusted after the semi-final match to play our best in the final match. The team continued to win the AVC Nations Cup 2025 for the third consecutive time, we also recognized the great determination of the players,” coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet shared after the final match.
Still need to improve
This is the third consecutive time that the Vietnamese women's team has won the continental championship, after 2023 and 2024. This is also a miracle for Vietnamese women's volleyball because "winning the championship is difficult, defending the championship is even more difficult". However, the Vietnamese girls have done that "difficult thing" twice. This once again affirms the constant progress and tireless efforts in the journey to bring glory to the country's volleyball by coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet and his team.
Thanh Thuy, Bich Tuyen, Lam Oanh, Khanh Dang, Bich Thuy, Nguyen Thi Trinh, Nguyen Thi Uyen, Kieu Trinh… had a successful tournament. But in the achievements of that team, we need to mention the great contribution of the duo Thanh Thuy and Bich Tuyen, the two players who scored the most points of the team in the tournament.
If the 2023 championship was marked by the main striker Thanh Thuy, then the "queen" in 2024 was the brilliant brilliance of the opposite Bich Tuyen. And this year, at Dong Anh Stadium, fans witnessed this duo shine together, continuously scoring important points to help the home team overcome difficulties (typically after the second set of the semi-final match against Kazakhstan). A little more prominent was Bich Tuyen, the opponent born in 2000, who scored the most points on the team, and for the second consecutive time received the title of best player of the tournament.
Despite winning the championship, the team's playing style still has concerns, which are the first step and the ability to defend. This is a problem that coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet mentioned quite a lot since the group stage even though the team did not face very strong opponents. This problem was most clearly seen in the second set of the semi-final match against Kazakhstan.
At that time, the team's back row made many mistakes in the first step, leading to the opponent continuously scoring points and winning. After the match, coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet, captain Thanh Thuy and setter Lam Oanh also admitted this weakness, leading to difficulties in deploying the ball to attack. The first step is a long-standing problem of Vietnamese volleyball, not just the women's team.
In the group stage of the AVC Women's Volleyball Nations Cup 2025, Coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet had many experiments, especially in the back row positions when the team met weaker opponents. Certainly, in the coming time, the coaching staff will work more with the players on this issue to help them continue to improve. This is very necessary because this year Thanh Thuy and her teammates will have many other international tournaments, such as the VTV Cup at the end of June, the SEA V.League in July, the World Championship in August and the 33rd SEA Games at the end of the year.
Coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet said: “In this tournament, the team created conditions for many players to play. They have tried their best, but the team certainly needs to prepare more. However, we have to compete in many international tournaments, our goal is still to focus all our forces towards the 33rd SEA Games. In the next tournaments, the team will strengthen its ability to step one and defend. The whole team still has a lot to do and above all, it is to find the cohesion of the players”.
