The Ministry of Education and Training has just issued Decision No. 2269/QD-BGDDT on the 2025-2026 school year time plan framework for preschool education, general education and continuing education.
The Ministry of Education and Training requires educational institutions to return to school at least 1 week before the opening day. For grades 1, 9, and 12, return to school at least 2 weeks before the opening day.
This adjustment helps 9th and 12th graders prepare for the transition exam or graduation exam, need to spend time consolidating knowledge and 1st graders form a study routine before entering the new school year.
The opening ceremony will be held on September 5, 2025. Semester I ends before January 18, 2026, completing the program and ending the school year before May 31, 2026.
Consideration of recognition of completion of Primary School program and recognition of graduation from Secondary School before June 30, 2026. Complete enrollment of first grade classes before July 31, 2026.
The 2026 High School Graduation Exam is scheduled to take place on June 11-12, 2026. The earlier organization of the exam is consistent with the school year schedule, so students still have time to review for the exam. At the same time, this schedule is also suitable for localities to organize the entrance exam for grade 10 before the High School Graduation Exam. Other national exams are organized according to the regulations and instructions of the Ministry of Education and Training.
The school year of each locality must ensure 35 weeks of actual study (18 weeks for semester I and 17 weeks for semester II); at the same time, it must be consistent with the characteristics and practical conditions of the locality. The school year schedule must ensure consistency for all levels of education in a residential area, especially in general schools with many levels of education. Holidays and Tet holidays are implemented according to the provisions of the Labor Code and annual guidelines.
Teachers' annual leave is taken during the summer vacation or can be arranged alternately at other times of the year to suit the specific characteristics and school year schedule of the locality.
The Chairman of the People's Committee of the province or city is responsible for deciding on the school year schedule for preschool education, general education and continuing education in accordance with local realities.
Early school start time and extension of the school year shall not exceed 2 weeks compared to regulations to ensure implementation and completion of the program in case of being affected by natural disasters or epidemics; in special cases, report to the Ministry of Education and Training before implementation.
The Ministry of Education and Training also stipulates that the Director of the Department of Education and Training decides to let students take time off from school in case of extreme weather or natural disasters and arrange make-up classes; ensuring teachers' time off during the school year.
The Departments of Education and Training shall report to the Ministry of Education and Training on the preparation for the school year and the organization of the opening ceremony of the 2025-2026 school year before September 10, 2025; report on the summary of the implementation of tasks and key solutions for the 2025-2026 school year and the results of the implementation of emulation criteria, and propose consideration of rewards for the school year before June 25, 2026.
