Not coffee, experts say make this your morning priority

Many people have the habit of drinking coffee early in the morning. However, experts say that people should prioritize drinking more water for the following reasons.

Drinking plenty of water (80% of the required amount) during the day, specifically before 4 p.m., will help promote digestion and support better sleep, according to Verywell Health (USA).

Drinking coffee early in the morning causes dehydration?

Master Kacie Vavrek, sports nutritionist at Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center (USA), said drinking water at the beginning of the day helps aid digestion and replenishes the amount of water the body loses while sleeping.

“It is best for people to drink water regularly throughout the day, especially more in the morning and less in the evening,” said Vavrek.

In addition, Julia Zumpano, a nutritionist in the US, shared that a habit that people need to reconsider is starting the day with coffee: "Consuming coffee too early in the morning can cause dehydration. Therefore, people should start the day with water and drink caffeinated drinks a little later in the morning."

Zumpano added that cutting back on fluids a few hours before bed can help you get better rest. “Drinking less fluids about two hours before bed can help people avoid waking up in the middle of the night to urinate, which can be less disruptive to sleep for some people,” she said.

How to know if the body is lacking or having too much water?

Drinking too little water can lead to dehydration, headaches, cramps, or reduced performance, which can be especially dangerous for people who exercise intensely at night, Vavrek says.

Some signs to watch out for that show your body is dehydrated:

  • Dark or amber urine.
  • Feeling of being drowsy and not clear-headed.
  • Tired or lack of energy.
  • Dry mouth.
  • Headache.
  • Constipation.
  • Cramps.
  • Dizzy.

On the other hand, if you drink too much water, your body will also show signs:

  • Frequent urination (more than once per hour).
  • Flatulence.
  • Nausea.
  • Urine is clear and colorless.
  • Waking up to pee in the middle of the night.

In general, dehydration or overhydration are important health issues that need more attention. The key is that people need to ensure a balance in their water intake throughout the day, prioritizing drinking enough water before dinner to achieve health benefits.
