This statement was made after Thailand's Minister of Tourism and Sports, Mr. Surawong Thienthong, made a shocking proposal to ban Cambodia from participating in the 33rd SEA Games for the safety of its athletes and because of the current conflict at the border between the two countries.
"The Thai organizing committee, or even the SEA Games Council, has no right to ban any member country from competing if that country is still a member, and there is no official punishment," said Mr. Chaiyaphak Siriwat.
There is no ban on Cambodian sports from participating in the 33rd SEA Games: Because of serious violation of the Olympic Charter!
In addition, Mr. Chaiyaphak Siriwat also announced that there will be a joint meeting on August 20 and 21, with the participation of representatives from all 11 countries participating in the 33rd SEA Games, to discuss measures to comply with Olympic regulations if Cambodia is restricted or banned from participating. Mr. Chaiyaphak Siriwat also revealed that Cambodia has now announced the number of athletes who will go to Thailand to participate in the 33rd SEA Games, up to 1,515 people.
According to Mr. Chaiyaphak Siriwat, any statements and decisions related to the 33rd SEA Games must comply with the Olympic Charter, which adheres to the principles of political neutrality, non-discrimination and protection of the participation rights of all countries. He also affirmed that the voices of the 11 member countries of the SEA Games Council must be heard, and no country has the right to impose its own ban on another country from participating in the Southeast Asian Games.
The 33rd SEA Games held in Thailand at the end of this year will take place from December 9 to 20, in three major cities: Bangkok, Chonburi and Songkhla.
