Vietnamese tourists stuck in Taiwan for two days due to storm

Hoang Viet Travel's group of Vietnamese tourists stuck in Taiwan at Taichung airport on the morning of July 26.

Ms. Luu Thi Thu, Deputy Director of Hoang Viet Travel, said that the company had a group of customers departing on a schedule from Hanoi - Taipei - Taichung - Kaohsiung - Hanoi from July 20 to July 24 but were stuck for two days due to storms. The flight from Kaohsiung to Hanoi was postponed to July 28, but the customers did not want to wait long, so the company worked with the airline to change the flight schedule to fly from Taichung to Ho Chi Minh City on July 26 and then continue to Hanoi. The airline will cover 100% of the flight change fees.

During the two days stuck in Taiwan due to the storm, tourists had to pay about 45 USD per day, not including food and personal expenses, Hoang Viet Travel supported 15 USD. According to Ms. Thu, the costs incurred due to natural disasters are outside the tour cost, so the company can only support a part.

A representative of this unit informed that there was a group that departed for Taipei on July 25 from Hanoi, completed exit procedures but still had to return because the flight was delayed. This group is waiting for notification of a new itinerary from the airline.

Typhoon Gaemi, which made landfall on July 24, is the strongest storm to hit Taiwan in eight years. Typhoon Gaemi killed three people in Taiwan, injured about 380, caused flooding and sank a cargo ship.

According to reporters, many Vietnamese tourist groups traveling on the Taipei - Taichung - Kaohsiung route were greatly affected in terms of their schedules, especially on July 24 when many tourist attractions in Kaohsiung such as Fo Guang Shan, Lian Chi Pond, and Formosa Boulevard Station were closed.

Van Phuoc, a tour guide for BenThanh Tourist, who is leading a group of tourists from July 24 to July 27, said that luckily the group was still able to depart because they flew to Taichung, not Taipei. However, the guests' experience was only about 80% due to the closure of some places such as Alishan. The group also had to change their schedule and hotel from Kaohsiung to the Chiayi area to make their sightseeing schedule more convenient and avoid the storm. This morning, the group visited Fo Guang Shan and the weather was relatively good, the sky was still cloudy, and there were fewer visitors than usual.

According to a representative of BenThanh Tourist, on July 26, the effects of the storm had almost ended, but some tourist attractions near the sea or on the mountains remained closed, while tourist attractions in the city were welcoming visitors as usual. Currently, information from the Taiwan Meteorological Station shows that no storm is expected to form in the coming days, the storm has dissipated but there is still light rain. The company's partner in Taiwan informed that most tourist attractions can reopen from July 27.

Typhoon Gaemi causes heavy rain and strong winds in Taipei

Ms. Thu added that the first stop of the groups is Kaohsiung, so it is highly likely that it will not be affected by storms. In case of unusual weather, the unit will adjust the program such as changing the outdoor tour schedule to indoor - on the basis of respecting customers' opinions and ensuring the highest safety.
