Reviving barren land with 'king of bamboo shoots'

QTO - When a group of friends at the Bamovina Organic Agricultural Cooperative chose barren land to start their business, many people thought it was an unwise decision. Few expected that where the sweat of the young people fell, green bamboo shoots would soon sprout from the soil, bringing the green color of their dreams.

Sharing the "green dream"

The story begins with a girl with long hair and white skin, named Tran Thu Yen Nhi (born in 1997), living in Dong Hoi ward. 2 years ago, Nhi was still confused about her career choice. After graduating from the Vietnam Dance College, she found a suitable job. However, Nhi knew that with this choice, it would be difficult for her to realize her bigger dream of helping the poor improve their livelihoods and stabilize their lives. After much hesitation, Nhi finally turned to agriculture .

“From my family’s pilot model, I see that bamboo shoots are very suitable for the climate and soil of my hometown. This plant species not only brings high economic value but also contributes to protecting the environment and combating climate change. This could be a tree species that can help alleviate poverty,” Nhi said.

After the bold turn, in the first steps, Yen Nhi found 5 like-minded companions: Hoang Tan Thin, Luu Thanh Dat, Hoang Trung Duc, Tran Thi Hong Suong and Le Thi Thanh Thuy. Each of them has their own strengths. In particular, Duc, Suong and Thuy studied agriculture and forestry, and have tried their hand at many agricultural projects. Like Nhi, they want to get rich from their homeland's land to have the opportunity to help more people.

However, starting a business is not a problem with the same solution and answer. When starting a business, Nhi and her friends had to find their own way to do it. They went back and forth researching the quality of the seeds, experimenting with many growing methods, and searching for and applying high technology... Just like that, they worked and learned at the same time, then quickly built a standard process.

Breakthrough with high-tech agriculture

From reality, Yen Nhi and her friends realized that bamboo shoots grown using organic methods often grow and develop well, giving quite high yields. Considered the "king of bamboo shoots", this product is very popular. That prompted a group of young people to boldly join together and expand the bamboo shoot growing area to 21 hectares. In 2024, they established the Bamovina Organic Agricultural Cooperative. From here, production and business are more favorable.

Following a group of young people to the new bamboo shoot growing area in Nam Trach commune, what caught our eyes was a fertile, green land. Looking at that image, no one would think that this was once a barren land, full of reeds. Confiding in the guests, Le Thi Thanh Thuy (born in 1992) said that to make this change, they have implemented many solutions, in which they especially focused on applying high technology. Right from the beginning, a drip irrigation system applying technology from Israel was put into use. Every month, group members use modern machinery to measure and control soil indicators. The management of the large bamboo shoot area mainly relies on flycam. “Investing in high technology is quite expensive. Meanwhile, the group's capital is limited. We had to struggle a lot with our thoughts. I'm glad that we invested in the right direction,” Thanh Thuy said.

Later, the application of high technology in growing bamboo shoots helped the group of young people at Bamovina Organic Agriculture Cooperative to be more confident when participating in the 4th "Creative Startup" competition organized by the Provincial Youth Union. At the competition, the group impressed because the project was no longer on paper but had "germinated" in practice. In particular, the diligence in researching and applying high technology helped them gain more points. As a result, the Organizing Committee of the 4th "Creative Startup" competition unanimously awarded the second prize to the group of young people at Bamovina Organic Agriculture Cooperative.

Multiply the joy

In addition to the award presented by the Provincial Youth Union, another great joy for the young people is that the bamboo shoots of the Bamovina Organic Agricultural Cooperative have found a place in the market. Many owners of clean agricultural products stores, supermarkets, etc. trust and choose the product. Customers in big cities such as Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Hanoi , etc. have also contacted the Cooperative to order large quantities. On the favorable momentum, the young people have diversified their products with sweet and sour bamboo shoots, steamed bamboo shoots, dried bamboo shoots, etc.

Ms. Nguyen Thuy An, Store Manager of An Nong Clean Food Store said: “At An Nong, we always strive to choose the best products to bring to customers. That is the reason why the bamboo shoots of Bamovina Organic Agricultural Cooperative are on the store shelves. Recently, many customers have used the product and highly appreciated it.”

The initial success of the work has helped the group of young people at the Bamovina Organic Agricultural Cooperative to partly realize their wishes. Currently, the Cooperative is home to more than 10 workers. Mr. Lam Van Hung, residing in Ba Don commune, shared: “Before, I worked as a construction worker. The job was hard and the income was unstable. Since working for the Cooperative, I have found a job that is more suitable for my age and health. My monthly income is about 10 million VND.”

Despite their initial successes, the young people of the Bamovina Organic Agricultural Cooperative are still not satisfied. Day after day, they continue to work hard on bamboo clumps and bamboo shoots to conquer higher goals. Everyone hopes that their small story will inspire and contribute to fanning the flame of creative entrepreneurship in the hearts of other young people.
