According to a VNA correspondent in New York, speaking at a UN Security Council meeting proposed by Israel, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Europe, Central Asia and the US Miroslav Jenca said the situation in the occupied Palestinian territory continues to deteriorate, highlighting the urgency of finding a political solution to the Gaza crisis that can bring lasting peace and stability to the people on both sides.

The official warned that Israel's expansion of military operations in Gaza risks causing "catastrophic consequences" for millions of Palestinians and could further endanger the lives of hostages still being held in Gaza.

According to Mr. Miroslav Jenca, “the current situation in Gaza is unimaginable, with Palestinians suffering terrible, inhumane conditions every day.”

Since the conflict resumed, more than 60,000 Palestinians have been killed and casualties continue to rise daily. Citing an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in July 2024, the UN official said Israel is obliged to immediately cease all new settlement activity, evacuate all settlers from the occupied Palestinian territory and end its illegal presence there as soon as possible; and reaffirmed that international law states that Gaza must be an inalienable part of a future Palestinian State.

UN Assistant Secretary-General Miroslav Jenca issued the warning amid reports that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is considering a full occupation of Palestinian territory.

“There is no military solution to the conflict in Gaza or, by extension, the long-standing conflict between Israel and Palestine,” Mr. Miroslav Jenca stressed.

The official added that Israel is continuing to severely restrict humanitarian aid into Gaza, reiterating its call for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages, while affirming that the act of taking hostages is a violation of international law and a war crime./.
