Students seek technology-based solutions to social problems

On May 30, in Da Nang City, Samsung Vietnam and the Vietnam Youth Success Organization (JA Vietnam) launched the Solve for Tomorrow 2024 science and technology competition in the Central region.

Solve for Tomorrow is a competition that encourages middle and high school students (with the guidance of teachers) to proactively research and apply STEMeducation to solve local problems.

Students from several teams participated in the launching ceremony.

This is an activity within the Solve for Tomorrow 2024 roadshow series in 3 regions. In the Central region alone, in 2023, more than 1,000 students and teachers created 308 entries, many of which were highly appreciated and 3 teams made it to the final round.

Solve for Tomorrow 2024 is expected to attract about 160,000 students and teachers, with more than 2,200 entries nationwide. The total prize value of the competition is about 8 billion VND, the first prize winning school will be sponsored by Samsung to build a STEM Creative Space worth 70,000 USD.

Participating in the competition, students and instructors are trained in design thinking online and in person by the organizers.

The teams that made it to the top 40 were guided and trained by a team of senior professional advisors, leading experts from Vietnam and Samsung to improve their knowledge, soft skills, and business skills.

Solve for Tomorrow 2024 will be implemented in 7 months (from March to October 2024), divided into 2 groups for students of 2 blocks: middle school and high school with 3 rounds of competition applying STEM knowledge, Design thinking to find and realize creative solutions, handle social problems.

This year, in addition to the environment and health fields as every year, the competition expanded the topic to find solutions to support the disadvantaged, sustainable development models, products that meet market needs, and encourage startups.

On the afternoon of May 30, QCY Team ( Da Nang City, which won third prize in Group A of the Solve for Tomorrow 2023 competition with the topic "Road damage detection and warning system using artificial intelligence") shared its experiences with participating students.

In Vietnam, the Solve for Tomorrow competition was first held in 2019. After 5 years, the competition has become an annual creative thinking playground for students aged 12 to 18, with more than 300,000 students and teachers registering, receiving nearly 5,200 entries.

Mr. Choi Joo Ho, General Director of Samsung Vietnam Complex, said that the Solve for Tomorrow contest opens up opportunities for young people to approach science and technology more closely, participate in solving social problems with their own ideas, and at the same time acquire a lot of knowledge and seek out creative technological talents.

"When they are proficient in science and technology, have creative thinking and the ability to apply technology, they will become future leaders of Vietnam. That is the social responsibility of the Solve for Tomorrow program - a program that has had more than 2 million students worldwide participating," said Mr. Choi Joo Ho.
