US increases control over technology exports to Taiwan (China)

The United States has sent experts to Taiwan (China) with the aim of monitoring TSMC and other corporations' compliance with export regulations with Huawei.

Amid escalating trade and technology tensions between the United States and China, Washington has sent export control officers to the island to provide support and oversight.

Last year, a regional export control official from the U.S. Department of Commerce visited Taiwan for the first time, and earlier this year, another senior official from the Bureau of Industry and Security came to conduct compliance training for Taiwanese tech companies, according to Nikkei Asia.

The course has attracted participation from leading companies, including Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) and United Microelectronics Co. (UMC), two major semiconductor manufacturing corporations in Taiwan (China).

TSMC, the world's leading microprocessor supplier, said it had stopped doing business with Huawei since September 2020 and was committed to full compliance with US regulations. The company also affirmed that it would take prompt action if any violations were discovered, including conducting investigations and notifying relevant parties as necessary. The US Department of Commerce has asked TSMC for more information after it was suspected that the company may have intentionally evaded the export ban on Huawei.

In November last year, Wang Mei-hua, former Minister of Economic Affairs of Taiwan (China), revealed that Taiwan (China) and the United States have established a cooperation mechanism to help technology suppliers here understand and comply with US export control regulations. This not only helps Taiwan (China) avoid legal risks but also contributes to strengthening bilateral economic relations with the United States.
