Despite the unconvincing performance in the 0-0 draw with U23 Myanmar on the evening of July 22, head coach of the U23 Thailand team, Mr. Thawatchai Damrong-ongtrakul, was not pessimistic.
Instead, he affirmed that having to face host Indonesia in the semi-finals of the 2025 Southeast Asian U23 Championship is a good thing and an opportunity that the whole team has been waiting for.
“Having to face Indonesia is a good thing. I have talked to the players that we really want to meet Indonesia. Having to face the host team will be the best test for us to evaluate the team’s strength and potential,” said Mr. Thawatchai.
The Thai strategist did not underestimate his opponents when he said: "We are ready to meet Indonesia in the semi-finals. We know that they are one of the strongest teams in Southeast Asia at the moment. If we want to return to the No. 1 position, we must win against strong teams like this."
Coach Thawatchai also admitted that in the match against Myanmar, his team made mistakes and could have done better. However, Mr. Thawatchai pledged to take those mistakes as lessons to improve before the semi-final.
The coach's confidence was also reinforced by the statement of captain Seksan Ratree: "Personally, I feel very excited about facing Indonesia. All the players want to play in front of a large number of fans."
The semi-final match between U23 Thailand and U23 Indonesia will take place at 8:00 p.m. on July 25 at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium.
