'I feel guilty,' coach Kim Sang-sik said bitterly
"I feel sorry for the Vietnamese fans who traveled a long way to watch the team compete in Malaysia, as well as the audience watching the match on television," coach Kim Sang-sik opened the press conference after the Vietnamese team's heavy defeat at Bukit Jalil.
The Vietnamese team lost 0-4 to Malaysia in the second match of Group F of the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers. Although they held firm in the first half, coach Kim Sang-sik's team collapsed under pressure from their opponents in the second half of the match.
"The Vietnamese team still played as planned in the first half. However, the injuries of the two central defenders (Thanh Chung and Tien Dung) prevented the team from deploying their formation and playing style in the second half. That is the reason we lost the match," Mr. Kim explained.

"The Vietnamese team is not in the best physical condition due to playing in the V-League. Our initial plan was that if the whole team tried to defend in the first half to avoid conceding a goal, then in the second half, players like Quang Hai and Tien Linh would have a chance to score.
However, injuries to defensive players prevented us from playing according to our plan," coach Kim Sang-sik added.
The Malaysian team is very different from before, thanks to the influx of naturalized players. All four of Malaysia's goalscorers, Joao Figueiredo, Holgado, La'Vere Corbin Ong and Dion Cools, are of foreign origin.
In this match, Malaysia coach Peter Cklamovski arranged for 9 naturalized players to start. In the second half, 4 out of 5 substitutes were also naturalized players. Mr. Cklamovski affirmed that he did not care about the gossip, "as long as Malaysia wins the match".
"We tried to analyze Malaysia as much as possible, but all five of our opponents' newly naturalized players performed better than the coaching staff expected. The Vietnamese team had a hard time facing Malaysia. However, we learned a painful lesson to take advantage of in the following matches," coach Kim Sang-sik said.
There are not many opportunities left.
The 4 goals conceded came from basic scoring moves, such as central coordination, splits, and wing attacks... which put the Vietnamese team at a huge disadvantage in the race for a ticket to the 2027 Asian Cup finals.
Quang Hai and his teammates must win the remaining 4 matches, in which if Malaysia wins all 9 points against Laos (2 matches) and Nepal, Vietnam must win the final match against Malaysia with a difference of 4 goals or more.
"To prepare for the rematch with Malaysia, first of all, the Vietnamese team must understand and accept that the opponent has become stronger thanks to naturalized players. However, football always has room for miracles. If we prepare well, the Vietnamese team still has a chance to make up for the 4 goals lost today," Mr. Kim Sang-sik emphasized.
Vietnam will play the third and fourth rounds of the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers in October, with home and away matches against Nepal.
