Recently, on many social networking platforms, a video recording the image of a transparent toilet placed right on the sea surface attracted millions of views.
According to the introduction, this is how some toilets installed on offshore rigs work.

The image shared on TikTok shows the toilet mounted on a wire mesh floor and can see through to the sea below. When the camera moves closer, viewers can see fish swimming in the sea water right below the toilet.
Another video shows a makeshift urinal for men strapped to an iron bar outside the rig with a urine pipe leading straight into the ocean.
Similar videos also depict toilets on older rigs from the 1970s and 1980s that were designed to "let waste go straight into the sea."
However, at present, with high environmental awareness, the design is no longer suitable and has been harshly criticized. Waste can carry bacteria and toxic substances that are harmful to the ocean ecosystem, affecting marine life.

Faced with shocking images spreading rapidly on social networks, many people working in the oil and gas sector on drilling rigs have spoken out in protest.
Mr. Mosey, an engineer who specializes in sharing life on the rig, said that the restroom area where he works is fully equipped with toilets, lids, sinks with clean water. Waste must go through a treatment system before being discharged into the sea to ensure environmental protection procedures.
"Our rig has a separate wastewater treatment system and meets standards before discharging into the environment," said Mr. Mosey.
However, depending on the conditions of each rig with different levels of investment and design, there will be certain differences.
A Reddit user who said he worked on a rig in Saudi Arabia said they had only one giant shared bathroom, lacking toilet paper. However, the discharge process still had to follow general regulations.
