South Korea: Escalator accident injures 14 people

Yonhap news agency quoted South Korean police as saying that this morning, an escalator at a subway station (in Bundang district of Seongnam city, south of Seoul) suddenly reversed direction, injuring 14 people.

The accident occurred at 8:20 a.m. local time. The escalator going to Exit 2 of Sunae Station on the Bundang Subway Line suddenly reversed direction and went backwards for a few seconds. The incident left three people with back and leg injuries.

All victims were taken to hospital, 11 people with minor injuries were treated and sent home. None of the cases were life-threatening.

An investigation into the cause of the accident is underway. Police have ruled out the possibility that someone used the escalator's manual operating system to reverse the direction, leading to the accident.
