9News reported on September 25 that 12 soldiers were injured and taken to hospital after two Singaporean army armored vehicles were hit during a training exercise in the Central Queensland region of Australia.

The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) confirmed that one of its Hunter armoured fighting vehicles collided with the rear of another at about 7:40pm on 24 September (local time) while returning to base at Shoalwater Bay Training Area.

The collision left 12 SAF soldiers injured but not seriously, according to a statement from the Singapore military.

"The safety and well-being of our people is of utmost importance. The Army has called a safety pause to remind drivers to maintain appropriate distance," the statement said.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesperson said 10 patients were taken to Rockhampton Airport, where they were picked up by ambulance and taken to hospital. It is unclear why there was a discrepancy in the numbers.

The Australian Defence Force (ADF) said no personnel or vehicles were affected, but the ADF was assisting the SAF.

The Singapore and Australian armed forces have been conducting joint operations in the region as part of Exercise Wallaby. According to Singapore’s Ministry of Defence , the exercise involves about 6,200 personnel, 490 vehicles and other equipment and will last until November 3.

The Shoalwater Bay Training Area is also used by the SAF every year to conduct training activities lasting up to nine weeks, according to the Daily Mail .

Singapore has signed an agreement to conduct exercises under the Australia-Singapore Military Training Initiative. The agreement was announced in 2015 to enhance coordination between the two countries' forces.
