Open international gateway
Lach Huyen deep-water port is part of the Hai Phong port cluster. Since berths 1 and 2 at Lach Huyen officially came into operation in 2018, Hai Phong has gradually realized the dream of having a modern deep-water seaport that can receive large-tonnage ships without transshipment. In the second quarter, berths 5, 6 and berths 3 and 4 at Lach Huyen were officially put into operation, bringing the total number of berths operating at Lach Huyen wharf area to 6.
As the first deep-water port in the North, Lach Huyen is capable of receiving 12,000 TEU container ships and 160,000 DWT general cargo ships. Goods from Lach Huyen transported to international markets do not have to transit through regional ports such as Hong Kong (China) or Singapore, thereby shortening time, reducing logistics costs and increasing the competitiveness of Vietnamese goods.
In the overall Hai Phong port cluster, Lach Huyen has an outstanding advantage thanks to its location outside the river mouth, convenient traffic connection via Hanoi - Hai Phong highway, railway and soon the coastal road, Tan Vu - Lach Huyen 2 bridge. These connections create an inter-regional transport corridor, helping to reduce logistics costs, improving the competitiveness of goods in the Northern region.

The volume of goods passing through Lach Huyen port has continuously grown impressively, especially container goods imported and exported directly to Europe, the US, Japan, and Korea.
Major shipping lines such as Maersk, MSC, ONE, CMA-CGM... have chosen Lach Huyen as a regular docking point. State management at the port area is constantly being improved, ensuring maritime activities take place safely, smoothly, effectively and in strict compliance with international regulations.
On July 8, 2025, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha signed Decision No. 1497/QD-TTg approving the investment policy of the Project to build ports No. 9, 10, 11 and 12 at Lach Huyen wharf area, Hai Phong city.
The project has a total investment of nearly VND 24,846 billion, implemented in two phases: phase 1 from 2026 - 2030 will build two berths 9 and 10; phase 2 from 2031 - 2035 will continue to deploy two berths 11 and 12. The main berths are 1,800m long, capable of receiving ships from 12,000 TEU to 18,000 TEU; accompanied by a 400m long secondary berth serving feeder and domestic ships.
Constructing a system of container yards, repair workshops, roads, auxiliary works and synchronous technical infrastructure works to ensure all port operations; investing in modern, specialized cargo handling and loading equipment for port operations; land use scale (water surface) of about 146.2 hectares.
International logistics center
The investment goal of building 4 container ports No. 9, No. 10, No. 11 and No. 12 in Lach Huyen wharf area contributes to the formation of a modern seaport system, capable of receiving large ships with a capacity of 12,000 - 18,000 TEU; connecting large seaports with duty-free zones and logistics behind the port, speeding up the circulation of goods, thereby enhancing advantages, creating momentum for development, attracting investment; maximizing the advantages of natural conditions and geographical location to develop Dinh Vu - Cat Hai Economic Zone (seaport system, logistics and industrial park adjacent to the port).

With the approval of 4 new ports in Lach Huyen port area, creating a port cluster with scale and exploitation capacity of Southeast Asia scale. This is a new milestone in the process of developing national seaports, creating leverage for Hai Phong to realize the goal of becoming a regional and international logistics center, especially in the context of Hai Phong and Hai Duong just merged.
The event of Hai Phong merging with Hai Duong created a strong resonance force. With the advantage of being a coastal city, Hai Phong possesses all 5 types of transportation, has an important position in the Northern coastal region, the intersection of 2 economic corridors Kunming - Lao Cai - Hanoi - Hai Phong; Nanning - Lang Son - Hanoi - Hai Phong and the Northern coastal corridor; is an important traffic hub, the main gateway to the sea of the Northern provinces.
Meanwhile, Hai Duong is a dynamic industrial and agricultural center, with a developed system of industrial parks and clusters, thousands of processing and assembly factories and large-scale agricultural production areas. The connection between Hai Duong's processing and production capacity and Hai Phong's logistics seaport system will promote import and export, developing international trade.

According to Mr. Tran Tien Dung, Chairman of Hai Phong Logistics Association, in recent years, Hai Phong has affirmed its important role in economic development and trade. With its position as the northern gateway, Hai Phong City is now expanding to the east, creating room for development, creating great momentum and opportunities to attract investment to Hai Phong in the coming time.
