Google is about to delete millions of abandoned Gmail accounts

According to IndiaToday , Google warned about the new policy about six months ago and said it would not take any action until December. The measure will not affect people who actively use the company's services such as Gmail, Documents, Calendar or Photos. Accounts that have not been used for at least two years or have not been logged in will be deleted. At the same time, all data related to the service will also be deleted.

Accounts that are inactive for 2 years will be on Google's deletion list.

At the time, Google said: "Before deleting an account, we send multiple notifications to both the account's email address and the alternate email address (if applicable) several months in advance."

The company added that it chose this measure for security reasons, as old and inactive accounts are more likely to fall victim to scammers. "If an account has not been used for a long time, it is more likely to be compromised. This is because forgotten or unattended accounts often have old or reused passwords that can be compromised," Google explained.

By Google's own estimates, abandoned accounts are at least 10 times less likely to have two-factor authentication than active accounts. Two-factor authentication makes it harder for attackers to access someone else's account, and Google repeatedly emphasizes this in its security recommendations.
