Thanks to the latest advances in artificial intelligence (AI), Google Translate is getting two major updates: real-time live translation and language training tools.
These new features are powered by Google's Gemini model, which significantly improves translation quality, multimodal translation, and text-to-speech (TTS) capabilities.
Real-time live translation
Google Translate introduces the "Live translate" feature that allows users to have instant two-way conversations.

To try it out, open the Google Translate app on your Android phone or iPhone, select Conversations , then choose a language pair (like Vietnamese-English) and start speaking. The app will then translate the audio and display subtitles on the screen. This feature supports more than 70 languages, including Vietnamese. Note that you need to update to the latest version to use it.
The new interface works according to the flow of conversation and can switch smoothly between two languages by "intelligently recognizing pauses, intonation, and accent." Advanced speech and voice recognition models have been trained to work effectively even in noisy environments like airports and coffee shops.
This feature is currently rolling out on Google Translate for both Android and iOS. It is expected to be a great help when users go to a foreign country without being fluent in the foreign language.
Personalized language practice tool
Additionally, Google Translate is competing with language learning app Duolingo by adding a new language learning feature that focuses on conversation practice. Users can choose their level (Beginner, Basic, Intermediate or Advanced) and specific practice goals, or choose from pre-made scenarios like "Everyday Conversation" or " Travel and Transportation."
The app creates personalized listening and speaking sessions. Once you select a scenario, you can: Practice listening by listening to conversations and tapping on words you recognize to improve your comprehension; Practice speaking by following along with the dialogues with prompts when needed.
Google will track your daily progress to help you build more confident communication skills.
This feature is being tested on Google Translate for Android and iOS. Initially, it will be available to English speakers practicing Spanish and French, and Spanish, French, and Portuguese speakers practicing English.
Google says people translate about 1 trillion words every month through Google Translate, Search, and visual tools like Lens and Circle to Search. With AI, language barriers can be overcome more easily.
