Then singing and Tinh lute is a unique folk performing art form that is indispensable in the spiritual and cultural life of the Tay and Nung ethnic groups in Lang Son in particular, and the Tay, Nung and Thai ethnic groups in the whole country in general.

On October 14, the People's Committee of Lang Son city (Lang Son province) organized a festival of Then singing, Tinh lute, folk songs, folk dances, and community dance clubs; introducing and performing traditional ethnic costumes in 2023.

The organization of the Festival aims to effectively implement the Project "Preserving and promoting the values of folk songs, folk dances, and folk music of ethnic minorities associated with tourism development, period 2021-2030" of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as well as the plan of the People's Committee of Lang Son province on implementing the Project "Preserving and promoting the values of folk songs, folk dances, and folk music of ethnic minorities associated with tourism development" in the province, period 2022-2030).

The Then singing, Tinh lute, folk singing, folk dancing and community dancing clubs brought to this year's Festival 50 unique performances, elaborately and methodically staged in the form of duo singing, group singing, and traditional musical instrument performances, highlighting the beauty of the cultural identity of the ethnic groups in the area.

As a bridge for meeting, exchanging, sharing and learning experiences between Then singing clubs, Tinh lute, folk songs, folk dances and community dances, the Festival contributes to preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of ethnic groups, while creating a space and cultural environment for artisans, cultural subjects and mass actors to practice, perform, promote and introduce the image, country and people of Lang Son, which is friendly, close and hospitable.

This is also an opportunity to introduce the characteristics, identity and beauty of traditional costumes, folk songs, folk dances and folk music of ethnic communities in the area to people and tourists inside and outside the province.

The festival aims to raise awareness among all levels, sectors and ethnic people about their sense of responsibility in preserving, conserving and promoting unique traditional cultural values of the locality associated with building and developing Vietnamese culture and people, meeting the requirements of sustainable national development.

The activities at the Festival promote, honor and develop traditional costumes, folk songs and dances of various ethnic groups; educate patriotism and national pride; strengthen solidarity; promote socio -economic development; improve the enjoyment of cultural and spiritual life for the people...

In the spiritual and cultural life of the Tay and Nung ethnic groups in Lang Son in particular, and the Tay, Nung and Thai ethnic groups in the whole country in general, Then singing and Tinh lute are a unique and indispensable folk performing art form.

One of the unique features of Then is the language that contains cultural depth. The content of Then songs - a type of folk performance, integrating many art forms, all exude profound humanistic thoughts, containing love for nature, love between couples, the meaning of husband and wife, moral teachings, praise for the village, homeland... Then melodies are profound, have the power to convey emotions, move people's hearts, the sound of the Tinh lute - the main instrument used in Then singing is smooth, vibrant, creating a unique folk song and dance soul.

On December 12, 2019, at the 14th session of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of 2003 held in Bogotá, Colombia, "Then practice of the Tay, Nung, Thai people in Vietnam" was officially listed by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

In September 2022, Tuyen Quang province held a ceremony to receive the Certificate of Inscription of "Then Practice of the Tay, Nung, and Thai People in Vietnam" into the list of Representative Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
