World gold price increased to unprecedented high

As of 3:00 p.m. this afternoon, Vietnam time, the world gold price reached 3,550.01 USD/ounce, up 0.37% or 12.94 USD/ounce compared to yesterday.

Gold prices rose sharply and are on track for their best week in three months. The main reason comes from growing expectations that the US Federal Reserve (Fed) will cut interest rates this month. The market's focus is now on the US non- farm payrolls report to be released later in the day.

Specifically, spot gold prices increased by 0.37%, hovering near the record high of 3,578.5 USD/ounce set on Wednesday. For the whole week, gold prices increased by 4.19%. At the same time, the price of gold for December delivery in the US also increased slightly by 0.1% to 3,611.7 USD/ounce.

Gold prices are up slightly today, but traders are still cautious and don't want to push prices too high until they see the results of the jobs report, said Tim Waterer from KCM Trade.

He said market forces are still supporting gold prices, including the possibility of interest rate cuts, President Trump's efforts to steer the Fed to a more dovish stance, and the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

This optimism was reinforced by recent data on the US labor market. The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits rose more than expected last week, suggesting that the labor market is cooling. Furthermore, the ADP private employment report also showed that the number of jobs created in August was lower than expected.

Several Fed officials this week said concerns about the labor market reinforced their belief that a rate cut was needed in the near term, with Fed Governor Christopher Waller even suggesting the central bank should cut rates at its next meeting.

Investors now almost certainly expect the Fed to cut rates by 0.25% after its two-day policy meeting on September 17, according to the FedWatch forecasting tool. Gold is a non-yielding asset, so it tends to be more attractive in a low-interest-rate environment.

Meanwhile, demand for physical gold in central Asian markets fell this week due to high prices, forcing dealers in major consuming markets such as China and India to offer discounts to attract buyers.

Besides gold, spot silver rose 0.4% to $40.84 an ounce and was on track for a third straight weekly gain. Platinum also rose 0.9% to $1,379.24 an ounce, while palladium was unchanged at $1,127.4 an ounce.
